Season 1
[edit]Becoming Carmen Sandiego (Part 1) [1.1]
[edit]- [Chase Devinaux and Julia Argent are cruising along a lonely road in Poitiers]
- Chase: In just the last few weeks, this Carmen Sandiego has managed to rob millions of euros combined from a Swiss bank, a high-end art gallery in Cairo, and a Shanghai amusement park.
- Julia: Before vanishing without a trace. Headquarters has yet to discern any pattern, except that our perpetrator always wears a scarlet coat and fedora and seems to announce her crimes by making random public appearances beforehand.
- Chase: Such as the nearby café sighting earlier today. So we must ask ourselves, who in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Why would a thief draw attention to herself by leaving clues and wearing bold colors?
- Julia: Perhaps stealing's a game to her.
- Chase: Ha! The game is over! She's in my jurisdiction now, though I question why.
- Julia: Poitiers is rich with medieval history. Perhaps she is targeting a priceless antique or historic artifact from one of its many churches, or--
- Chase: [slams down on the brakes] Ms. Argent, you are an agent of Interpol, not a museum guide, so you may stop sharing dull facts about boring things. You've been on the force merely a fortnight, have you not? [Julia notices a shadowy figure in her rearview mirror] You have so much to learn, and since you have been assigned to my department...
- Julia: Uh, uh...
- Chase: I, Chase Devinaux, will be you teacher.
- Julia: Inpsector Devinaux, sir--
- Chase: Nuh-uh! Sit back, watch, and learn how to catch a thief.
- Julia: [points behind her] She's right there!
- Chase: Huh? [looks behind him to see Carmen Sandiego using a grappling hook to scale a building] LE FEMME ROUGE!!!! [slams down on the gas and turns the car around]
- [Carmen admires the view of Poitiers from on top the building]
- Carmen: On top of the world. I can see La Cathédrale Saint-Pierre from here.
- The Player: [over the intercom in Carmen's ear] Friendly advice: save the sightseeing for after the job.
- Carmen: Ha-ha. Player, glad to hear you're on board.
- The Player: You know I wouldn't miss a night out with you for the world, Red. Let's get this party started.
- [Chase pursues Carmen using a slow elevator]
- Chase: Why must the elevator date back two centuries? Was no one ever in a HURRY BACK THEN?!?!
- [Carmen opens the safe to find a large gem in the center]
- Carmen: The Eye of Vishnu.
- [just as Carmen is about to go into the safe, she notices something and gasps]
- The Player: What is it, Red?
- Carmen: I'm staring at something I thought I'd never, ever set eyes on again.
- The Player: It better be more valuable than a sparkly blue gemstone the size of my head.
- Carmen: Define "valuable." They say beauty's in the eye of the beholder.
- The Player: Are you gonna tell me what it is, Red, or--
- [Chase starts banging on the door]
- Chase: Interpol! Open this door!
- The Player: Bag the gem and get outta there already!
- Chase: I said open up! [rams the door open to find Carmen holding a small bag] Stop, thief!
- [Carmen kicks on Ottoman towards Chase, making him trip and somersaults on him, knocking him down]
- Carmen: On who's authority?
- Chase: On the authority of, uh... [reaches for his badge but finds that it's gone]
- Carmen: [holding Chase's badge] "Inspector Chase Devinaux, Interpol." "Chase," huh? Hmph. Let's see what in a name. [throws Chase's badge at him]
- [Chase runs to grab Carmen, but misses as Carmen uses her grappling hook to reach the ceiling and escape through the skylight]
- Chase: [bursts through the windows] I order you to stop! [Carmen stops; Chase climbs out the window and tiptoes slowly along the wall]
- Carmen: You didn't say for how long. [runs away]
- Chase: IT WAS IMPLIED!!! [runs after Carmen]
- [after escaping Chase, Carmen arrives at a train station in her casual wear and steps into a train]
- Carmen: First class. Sweet.
- The Player: My treat, Red. You earned it.
- [just Carmen is about to settle down, Crackle comes up behind her]
- Crackle: Well, well. [activates his Crackle Rod; Carmen turns around to face him] Blast from the past, eh? [fires an electromagnetic pulse]
- [the Player loses Carmen on his computer]
- The Player: Red! Carmen!
- [back at the train]
- Carmen: Dude, seriously? Static cling?
- Crackle: Side effect of the directional EMP. So you can about reaching for your phone or fancy toys. They're dead.
- Carmen: I know how an electromagnetic pulse works, Gray. You aren't the only one who passed Dr. Bellum's class. And you didn't really think I'd take any of your bait without checking for a tracking device, did you, Gray? [Crackle gives a shocked look] That's right, I wanted you to find me. It's time we tied up loose ends.
- Crackle: You were the only loose end until five seconds ago when I captured the elusive Carmen Sandiego. Or should I call you... Black Sheep?
- [Carmen tells Crackle of her past life in the Isle of V.I.L.E.; in her flashback Carmen (known back then as Black Sheep) hears a the ringing of a cell phone she stole that she hid in one of her Russion nesting dolls; she opens the doll to see a picture of a white hat on the phone]
- Black Sheep: A white hat? [picks up the phone and reads a text] "Better beef up your security. I got in." [looks around to see if anybody is looking; texts back] "Got in?" Where? Here?
- [the phone rings; Black Sheep picks it up to avoid getting caught]
- The Player: Hello?
- Black Sheep: He... Hello?
- The Player: Who is this?
- Black Sheep: Black Sheep.
- The Player: Come on, what's your real name?
- Black Sheep: Black Sheep.
- The Player: Okay, usernames work. You can call me... Player.
- Black Sheep: Do you really wear a white hat?
- The Player: [looks at his white baseball cap] Uh, why? You've never heard of "white hat hackers?"
- Black Sheep: That's a thing?
- The Player: I have wicked hacking skills, but I use them for good.
- Black Sheep: Okay, that doesn't even make sense.
- The Player: Sure it does. I just hacked through 27 layers of encryption. So, who do I inform over there about the weak link so you can upgrade your security?
- Black Sheep: Are you punking me? Where are you calling from?
- The Player: My room, in Niagara Falls.
- Black Sheep: [gasps in excitement] Seriously?! Which side of the falls?
- The Player: Canadian.
- Black Sheep: You're in Ontario!
- The Player: Whoah, you really know your geography.
- Black Sheep: What's it like there?
- The Player: It's alright. [Black Sheep sees Coach Brunt out the window] We have computers, and Internet, and... [Black Sheep runs out of her room] Hey, where in the world are you?
- Black Sheep: School.
- The Player: What kind of school needs 27 layers of encryption?
- [after talking to the The Player, Black Sheep decides to go up to the faculty of VILE]
- Professor Maelstrom: Black Sheep, why have you requested our audience?
- Black Sheep: I'm ready.
- Maelstrom: Hmph. To enroll?
- Black Sheep: I know I'm not technically old enough, Professor Maelstrom, but I already have what it takes to be an awesome thief. Best ever! [Maelstrom raises an eyebrow] Um, in-- in my opinion, sir.
- Dr. Bellum: Black Sheep may be young, but she has had more training at her age than any recruit, even if only by osmosis.
- Coach Brunt: Dr. Bellum is right. Lambsie's got gumption. I'd say she's ready to run with the big dogs.
- Countess Cleo: I, for one, am not thrilled with the notion of having to endure Black Sheep's lack of manners in a classroom setting. The girl is feral.
- Maelstrom: Precisely why she might be overdue for properly supervised training, Countess Cleo. And you, Shadowsan?
- Shadowsan: We are operating a vocational school, not a nursery school.
- Bellum: But we've never met a case for advanced placement until now.
- Brunt: And last time I checked, majority vote rules.
- Shadowsan: [stands up] Black Sheep, you had better be certain that becoming a professional thief is what you truly desire, for if you choose this road, there will be no turning back.
- Black Sheep: I want this more than anything, Instructor Shadowsan. And I am willing to go to the end of the line. [bows]
- Maelstrom: All in favor?
- [Brunt, Maelstrom, Cleo and Bellum all raise their hands, but Shadowsan simply walks away]
- Brunt: [weeping] Our little lamb's gonna be all grown up!
- [Black Sheep and his classmates are at Maelstrom's class]
- Maelstrom: [holding a black suitcase] To properly execute a bait-and-switch, the objects should be of equal weight and size.
- [Sheena opens her suitcase, revealing a huge amount of cash; she and Maelstrom walk and bump into each other; Sheena grabs what she thinks is her suitcase]
- Maelstrom: And there you have the switch. [opens the suitcase, revealing the cash]
- Sheena: [opens her suitcase, revealing a horde of bugs and worms] Oh, gross! What is this?!
- Maelstrom: That, my dear, would be the bait.
- [after Gray(Crackle) and the others take responsibility for Black Sheep's prank]
- Sheena: Detention? What, are we in grade school?
- Black Sheep: [sighs in relief] Thanks for having my back.
- Sheena: I'm going to have your hide.
- Gray: Hey, can we focus? These code names aren't naming themselves.
- Antonio: Ooh, I have one for you: Shocker.
- [Gray raises an eyebrow]
- Jean Paul: The Shocksmith?
- Sheena: Lame.
- Black Sheep: Power Failure.
- Gray: Sorry, mates, nothing quite has the crackle I'm looking for. [gasps] That's it! Get ready. Graham Crackle.
- Black Sheep: Dude, really?
- Jean Paul: We are criminals! Who would take us seriously if we had puns for names?
- Gray: Okay, I'll drop the Graham part.
- [Black Sheep has found out that she's failed the semester; she comes up to Shadowsan; Shadowsan reaches his pocket and finds his keys missing]
- Black Sheep: [angrily holding Shadowsan's keys] Looking for these? [tosses the keys to Shadowsan, who catches them]
- Shadowsan: Playing games? Typical.
- Black Sheep: No game. I want a do-over.
- Shadowsan: And you will have it next year, once you redo your coursework.
- Black Sheep: You're not hearing me. Put on the coat. I want a do-over now.
- Shadowsan: We do not bend policy for other students, so we really must stop doing it for you. Good night, Black Sheep.
- Black Sheep: The coat was empty, wasn't it?!
- Shadowsan: ARE YOU ACCUSING A VILE INSTRUCTOR OF CHEATING?!
- Black Sheep: S-sorry. It's just I know I'm as good as anyone in my class. Better, even! And I know you know it, too!
- Shadowsan: And you also happen to be unruly, undisciplined, AND A PRANKSTER!! I would strongly urge that you find a way to get those qualities in check since they seem to be holding you back. [leaves]
- Black Sheep: No. Nothing's holding me back. Not anymore.
Becoming Carmen Sandiego (Part 2) [1.2]
[edit]- [Black Sheep has stowed away on a VILE helicopter; her phone rings]
- Black Sheep: Player, not a good time.
- The Player: Can't cite the "no cellphone rule" if you're not on campus. Taking a little field trip?
- Black Sheep: What? How did you know?
- The Player: Remember how I could never hack past the jammers at your school to triangulate your location? Well, guess what. Your phone suddenly lit up on my dashboard. It looks like you're currently traveling en route...
- [a radio beeps]
- Black Sheep: Dude, hold that thought.
- Cleaner: Approaching drop point. Assume your positions.
- Black Sheep: Gotta call you back. [hangs up and sees that Crackle, Tigress, El Topo and Le Chevre are about to jump out of the helicoptor] I don't have a parachute!
- [El Topo and Le Chevre jump out of the helicopter; Tigress hesitates]
- Crackle: What are you waitin' for? Cats always land on their feet! [kicks Tigress out of the chopper]
- Black Sheep: Heads up! [leaps onto Crackle, knocking him out of the chopper]
- Crackle: Black Sheep?!
- Black Sheep: Don't let go!
- [Crackle opens the parachute and they safely land]
- Crackle: Are you out of your mind?! [looks around for witnesses] You just put your safety and my entire criminal career at risk! What'll the Faculty do when they discover you decided to tag along on our mission?!
- Black Sheep: Who cares? I'll be long gone.
- Tigress: Crackle! Let's move!
- Crackle: Star here. I mean it. [goes to join the others]
- Black Sheep: Huh. Time to crash a caper. [goes to join the others]
- [Mime Bomb, who had been spying on Black Sheep, mimes what he saw to the Faculty; first he begins to act like a chicken]
- Cleo: You are a chicken? [Mime Bomb nods and then flaps his arms] Chickens do not fly.
- Maelstrom: Who here thought it was a good idea to make a mime a spy?
- Brunt: [watches as Mime Bomb makes bird movements with his hands] Fly the coop? [Mime Bomb jumps and points to his own nose] Black Sheep's run off with the others.
- Shadowsan: Hmm...
- Cleo: We could have quite a mess on our hands.
- Maelstrom: Alert the Cleaners.
- [Black Sheep is exploring the ruins when she sees a beautiful sight]
- Black Sheep: Casablanca. I'm in Morocco. [chuckles] I made it to the real world. Mission first, sightsee later. [takes a selfie of herself and runs to join the others]
- [Black Sheep walks through the ruins and into an archaeological dig site]
- Archaeologist: Young lady? It is quite late. Do your parents know where you are?
- Black Sheep: I don't even know where I am. What is this place?
- Archaeologist: An archaeological dig site, where we search for links to our past.
- Black Sheep: You mean, like, dinosaur bones?
- Archaeologist: Anything historic. If you've been following the news, you'll know that we just discovered a relic here dating from a much more recent era: the Eye of Vishnu. My crew identified it just days ago and are carefully unearthing it at this very moment.
- Black Sheep: And you're not worried about them stealing it?
- Archaeologist: Now, why ever would they do that? My crew is well aware that a treasure such as this belongs in a museum.
- Black Sheep: Tresure? As in, worth a fortune?
- Archaeologist: Some things possess value other than monetary, young lady. Any historic find such as this gem belongs to everyone. Its theft would rob the world of knowledge, and that would be a true crime.
- [a look of guilt goes across Black Sheep's face as she realize what Crackle and his team are doing]
- Black Sheep: I... I never really thought of it that way.
- [the lights go out]
- Archaeologist: [over the radio] Pit crew, report, please!
- Black Sheep: Gray must have cut the power. This is the caper!
- [Black Sheep looks up to see Le Chevre climbing up the ruins and sliding down on a rope, knocking out two guards; she then sees Tigress taking out a guard and two archaeologists; then she sees El Topo tunneling out of the ground with the Eye of Vishnu, and she jumps down to him]
- El Topo: Black Sheep? But I though you did not graduate.
- Black Sheep: [sees the Eye of Vishnu] Whoa, it's amazing!
- Crackle: Black Sheep! Stay away! You'll ruin the mission!
- [the lead archaeologist climbs down to see Black Sheep and El Topo with the Eye of Vishnu]
- Archaeologist: [shocked] You are in cahoots with them?
- Black Sheep: Uh, well, yes... and no. It's complicated.
- Archaeologist: STOP, THIEVES!!! [runs after El Topo; but Crackle stops him] Out of my way!
- El Topo: Crackle, remember, leave no witnesses. [jumps into the hole]
- [Crackle knocks down the archaeologist]
- Black Sheep: Wait, what do you mean, "leave no witnesses"?! [Crackle pulls out his Crackle Rod and charges it up] GRAY, NOOOOO!!!!
- [as Crackle is about to fire a shot at the archaeologist; Black Sheep knocks him over, causing him to miss his shot; the archaeologist runs away as Crackle aims at him again until Black Sheep stops him]
- Black Sheep: Gray, what are you doing?! What is wrong with you?!
- Tigress: [leaps down] I'll handle the runt!
- [as Tigress runs up to the two, Black Sheep yanks the Crackle Rod from Crackle and uses it to hit Tigress in the face]
- Crackle: Oh, pussycat down.
- Le Chevre: She did not protect the face.
- Black Sheep: Gray! [swings the Crackle Rod at Crackle] What are you doing?!
- Crackle: Come on, now.
- Black Sheep: TELL ME!!!
- [the Cleaners approach Black Sheep from behind and knock her out with chloroform]
- Boris: Back to VILE Island with you.
- [back to the present]
- Carmen: I thought I knew you like the big brother I never had, Gray. [the trains stops] Until that moment.
- Crackle: What can I say? Graduation was a game-changer.
- [Crackle now tells his side of the story; it starts when Crackle and the others graduate with the others]
- Dr. Bellum: Graduates, you did not make it this far on your grades alone.
- Maelstrom: We have been profiling you all along, to test your allegiance as well as your willingness to go to any necessary extremes.
- Shadowsan: No one or thing must stand in the way of achieving our goals.
- Cleo: You've earned your place at our elite table.
- Brunt: Now hear the true name of VILE: Villains' International League of Evil.
- [Crackle has finished telling his side of the story]
- Carmen: [disgusted] Evil. Hmph! My entire upbringing was a lie. Stealing isn't a game. It does harm people, especially when you're willing to steal lives.
- [meanwhile, the train has started moving again; just as Chase has just arrived in his car]
- Chase: ARGH!!! So close! [drives after the train; his phone rings] What is it now, Ms. Argent?! I am driving!
- Julia: Inspector Devinaux, the purported crime scene is actually filled with stolen goods of all kinds. Cash, bonds, art.
- Chase: [confused] What? Was the apartment owner not the robbery victim?
- Julia: That's what I said. So I did some fact-checking. The owner on record isn't an individual, but an import-export company. But even more intriguing, the places Carmen Sandiego recently robbed, the Swiss Bank, the art gallery in Cairo, the Shanghai amusement park, all have ties to the same company.
- Chase: Ms. Argent, what is it you are trying to say?
- Julia: Well, what if, for whatever reason, Carmen Sandiego were a thief who only steals from other thieves?
- Chase: Grr, no! [his engine begins stalling as the gas tank is empty] No, no, no, no, no, no, no! [his car stops and he steps outside and kicks the door in rage]
- [Carmen continues telling her story; Black Sheep attempts to sneak out of VILE ISLAND; she steals her phone back]
- The Player: Guten tag, Strudelhaus of Düsseldorf. Can I help you?
- Black Sheep: Yeah, I-I-I was looking for...
- The Player: It's me. I'm screening.
- Black Sheep: [sighs in relief] Player.
- The Player: Where have you been?! Strange people have been answering your phone.
- Black Sheep: It's not my phone. I stole it.
- The Player: So you're a shoplifter! And you haven't called me all summer long because you've been in jail.
- Black Sheep: [sighs] Player, remember when you told me you used your wicked skills for good?
- The Player: The white hacker's code.
- Black Sheep: What would you say if I told you I had wicked skills, too, from being raised in a school for thieves?
- The Player: I'd say that would explain a lot.
- Black Sheep: [sees Cookie Booker arriving] Don't go anywhere. [hides in the ventilation shaft above the room and sees Cookie Booker with the hard drive containing VILE's database] Player, I'm staring at a hard drive containing data that could fuel a criminal empire for a year. This may be my only shot to secure it.
- The Player: Then use those wicked skills, already.
- [as Black Sheep secretly follows Cookie Booker]
- Black Sheep: If anyone sees me take it, I'll never make if off this island. I need to avoid detection at all cost. [realizes Mime Bomb is watching her] Aw, crud! [turns to Mime Bomb] Mimosa Bombosa. What are you up to? [Mime Bomb mimes picking up a flower and smelling it] Stopping to smell the roses? [Mime Bomb smiles]
- The Player: This is the most one-sided conversation I've ever heard.
- Black Sheep: Shh, quiet! [Mime Bombs gives a puzzled look] Not you. Duh. Heh. Okay, happy gardening. [sidesteps away; Mime Bomb gives a suspicious look as he follows her] All good. It was just some creepy mime who hangs around campus watching everything. [realizes] And everyone. Because he's a spy and a snitch. [turns to Mime Bomb] NOBODY LIKES A TATTLETALE!!!
- [Black Sheep runs up to Mime Bomb and pounces on him; she then throws him into a broom closet and locks the door; Mime Bomb picks up a toolchest until Black Sheep comes back and takes it away]
- Black Sheep: And don't even think about picking the lock. [leaves]
- [Black Sheep has used the bait and switch technique to steal the hard drive from Cookie Booker and has evaded detection by wearing Cookie's red hat and coat and has escaped VILE Island on her boat]
- The Player: Hello?
- Black Sheep: Player, I made it. I'm off the island. I need to know where on Earth I am.
- The Player: Triangulating your position. The Canary Islands.
- Black Sheep: A Spanish settlement just off the coast of Western Africa. It was an interesting place to grow up, but it's time to see the rest of the world. No more bookkeepers, and no more VILE. [is about to throw the hat out, but stops]
- The Player: You'll need a passport, and I don't think Black Sheep's gonna cut it. You do have a name, don't you?
- Black Sheep: [looks at the tag on the hat that reads "Carmen Brand Outerwear, San Diego"] It's... Carmen. Carmen Sandiego. Now, about this whole "white hat" thing. [puts on the hat] Does it have to be white?
- [Carmen has finished telling her story as the train stops]
- Crackle: End of the line. We miss you, Black Sheep. VILE wants a truce.
- Carmen: They want me stealing for them instead of from them.
- Crackle: You've proven yourself. It's all you even wanted, isn't it?
- [meanwhile, Chase is following the train by a plane]
- Chase: Aha!
- [back to the train]
- Crackle: The league's offering you a full pardon. Even Shadowsan's on board. They'll make things right if you just come home, where you belong.
- Carmen: I was hoping we'd end up on the side again tonight, Gray. My side.
- Crackle: [sighs] Still in a league of your own. [charges up his Crackle Rod and aims it Carmen] Bye-bye, Black Sheep.
- Carmen: You weren't listening. I go by Carmen now. [pushes Crackle, causing him to miss his shot; a fight occurs when Carmen yanks the Crackle Rod from Crackle and aims it at him, but nothing happens]
- Crackle: Huh. Fingerprint recognition. [goes to grab the rod, but Carmen kicks him to the window]
- Carmen: They never protect the face. [smashes the Crackle Rod]
- [Chase enters the train and finds what appears to be Carmen]
- Chase: Carmen Sandiego, you're under arrest! [pulls off the hat, but finds that's it's really an unconscious Crackle wearing Carmen's coat] NOOOOO!!!! [the train begins to move and Chase looks out the window to see Carmen leaving the station] NO!! NOT AGAIN!! [his phone rings] Yes? What is it?
- Julia: Inspector Devinaux, we turned up something rather astonishing. I believe it's the Eye of Vishnu from the unsolved Morocco heist. We found it between the couch cushions. Almost as if--
- Chase: Let me guess! Almost as if Carmen Sandiego wanted us to find it. Ha! If our thief indeed left such a treasure behind, she must have gotten away with something truly priceless!
- [scene changes to Carmen riding a boat in Paris]
- The Player: Wait, seriously?! You didn't take the gemstone?
- Carmen: Total win-win. I knew Interpol would get it back where it belonged, which left my hands free to take the real treasure: [opens the bag to reveal her old Matyoshka dolls] my oldest travelling companions. Like an archaeology find, the only link I have to my past. [removes a tracking device from the bottom of the doll] I have Gray to thank for using them to bait me. [places the tracking device on a nearby boat] Now, did you wire the proceeds from the Shanghai job to the next non-profits on my list?
- The Player: Food bank, homeless shelter, orphanage. Check. I even had time to decrypt the next entry. Another secret VILE hideout, located in Southeast Asia on the island of Java.
- Carmen: Just when I thought I was through with islands. [sighs] Paris will be here. We need to stay one step ahead of VILE while we still have the advantage.
- The Player: I'll book you a red-eye.
- [unbeknownst to Carmen, another boat is following them]
- Zari: Chief, we have Carmen Sandiego in our sights.
