When something goes wrong in your life it doesn't finish you and you should become braver, knowing that you've got to go for things in life and don't regret because you didn't try to be as good as you might be.
    • How England broke their penalty shoot-out jinx against Columbia in The Indian Weekender, volume 10, issue 16, 2018-07-06 p. 22
    • The UEFA Euro 1996 was hosted by England and on 1996-06-26 England played Germany in the semi-finals, the match still remaining drawn after extra time. In the first round penalty shoot-out all five selected penalty takers from both sides scored, leading to sudden-death round of penalties by other players. As Germany's Andreas Möller scored and Southgate's kick was saved this prevented England progressing to the final. This quote is in the context of Southgate's England winning their first-ever penalty shoot-out in a world-cup. Southgate was also noted to have offered consolation to Colombia's Uribe who in failing to score from a penalty and as a result their team exiting the World Cup, Southgate having empathy with Uribe's situation.
