Out of primordial depths to destroy the world! (taglines)
Cmdr. Pete Mathews
[edit]- This is a submarine, John. If it can go underwater, it can go under ships, too. This is a deep channel. Better run below if you don't wanna get wet.
- The next time I cruise in these waters I'm going to have torpedoes with warheads on them.
- Do you mind if I make a mental comment upon the nature of women?
Other
[edit]- Narrator: From her beginnings on a Navy drawing board, through the months of secret field experiments out on the Western desert, then through the desperate search for new metals with the properties she needed, she was designed to be the nation's greatest weapon of the seas - the atom-powered submarine. Her engines were to be a miracle of speed and power, her sides strong enough to withstand any blow, her armament and fire power of greater force than the worst enemy she might encounter. The mind of man had thought of everything - except that which was beyond his comprehension!
Dialogue
[edit]- Deputy Bill Nash: Say, you mean to tell me the Navy sent you down here in one of those jets just so you could go fishing?
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: That's about it.
- Prof. John Carter: Look, Pete, you don't see many women in the Seagoing Navy.
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Are you kidding me?
- Prof. John Carter: Oh, shoreside women, sure. But there's a whole new breed who feel they're just as smart and just as courageous as men. And they are. They don't like to be overprotected. They don't like to have their initiative taken away from them.
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Doctor, what kind of a sea beast would be that large? And what do you call it so I can stop calling it It?
- Prof. John Carter: I have no idea.
- Prof. Lesley Joyce: Nor have I.
- [Prof. Carter pulls an octopus from an aquarium tank]
- Prof. John Carter: Here, gentlemen, is your villain.
- Naval Asst. Sec. Robert David Chase: It would take an enormous number of those to disable a Navy submarine.
- Prof. Lesley Joyce: Or just one of enormous size, Mr. Chase.
- Prof. Lesley Joyce: A - you'd want me to miss the opportunity to see this specimen, one that may never come again; B - you'd be making up my mind for me; and C - I not only don't like being pushed around, but you underestimate my ability to help in a crisis.
- Prof. John Carter: My sympathies are entirely on her side.
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Didn't take me very long to lose that argument, did it?
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Thought we had the thing figured out. What happened?
- Prof. Lesley Joyce: I can't tell you. Instead of being driven off, it attacked.
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Maybe it wants to fight.
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Well, I guess that's it. The sub's been ordered on patrol. We'll be on sea duty for a few months. We'll be seeing you, John.
- Prof. John Carter: Soon, I hope.
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Will I be seeing you, Leslie?
- Prof. Lesley Joyce: Do you mean when I get back from Cairo?
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: I mean, women can change, move away, get married, have families.
- Prof. Lesley Joyce: Well, there is that possibility; but, uh, A - there isn't time for that to happen to me; B - I can be reached at the school; and C - how would you like to collaborate with me on a book, "How To Catch A Sea Beast"?
- Cmdr. Pete Mathews: Say, doctor, you were right about this new breed of women!
- ["The End" title appears beneath trio]
