Dialogue

[edit]
[Oscar the Grouch is impatiently waiting on his telephone.]
Oscar: Operator? Operator, come on, I haven't got all night here!
[Telly Monster runs up to Oscar's can and frantically starts knocking at it.]
Telly: Oscar! Oscar! Oscar!
Oscar: Hey, scram, Telly! Scram, I'm makin' an important New Year's Eve phone call here.
Telly: Grouches celebrate New Year's Eve?
Oscar: Well, sure. Every year, I call my mom and some relatives, kind of a grouch conference call, and we say something very special to each other.
Telly: Wow. Well, if even grouches celebrate the new year, maybe I don't have to worry.
Oscar: [turns to the viewers] Oh, I can't resist. [turns to Telly; clears his throat] Of course you have to worry. Think about it, Telly. When this year is through, everything you know and love, all those things that are part of a year, the months, the days of the week, the hours, the minutes, the very seconds, everything that makes up a year will be over.
Telly: [uneased] ...Over?
Oscar: Why do you think they throw out old calendars at the end of the year?
Telly: I... I... I don't think I want to know, Oscar.
Oscar: Because they don't need them anymore.
[Telly runs off screaming.]
Oscar: [laughs] Oh, I enjoyed that.
