"Xbox 1.5"[edit]

The source for the "Xbox 1.5" comment is here. It's a May 21, 2005 interview at E3 by Masaichi Honda of PC-Watch.

A rough translation of the passage, in which Mr. Kutaragi differentiates the approaches Sony and Microsoft took in engineering their consoles:

We applaud Microsoft's investment in this industry. However, one cannot expand the current console gaming world by merely raising the graphic resolution and processing power of past consoles. The result of that decision [the Xbox 360] is not a next-generation Xbox, but an "Xbox 1.5". We would rather that Microsoft expanded into new, original ideas rather than simply do what this industry's always done with upgraded hardware. We feel that this would have broadened the world of "computer entertainment".

Although he was talking about greater possibilities through computing power as opposed to graphics, one might see the irony in his statement.

  • No, it is for computing-but I wanted to change the concept of computers. The name of our company is Sony Computer Entertainment; I wanted to merge computer technology and entertainment. It may be regarded as game applications for the time being, but I wanted to realize the day when "computer entertainment" would mean all such entertainment applications, including games.
