Alternative First Lines[edit]

Samuel Johnson noted variations of the text (see under Pope) in certain transcripts. For example, the first lines also went:
The stern Pelides’ {rage/wrath}, O goddess, sing,
Of all the {woes of Greece/Grecian woes} the fatal spring.
