This quotation is all over the internet. I cannot find it in any of Merton's writings. Does anyone have a source? or know for certain that it is a misattribution?
According to notable-quotes.com, it's from Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander. Now, in the time of the coronavirus, it takes on a special meaning.
