Thomas Howard Kean (/ˈkeɪn/ KAYN; born April 21, 1935) is an American businessman, academic administrator and politician who served as the 48th governor of New Jersey from 1982 to 1990 as a Republican. In 2002, he was appointed by U.S. President George W. Bush as chairman of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, commonly known as the 9/11 Commission. The commission investigated the causes of the September 11, 2001 attacks and provided recommendations to prevent future terrorist attacks. Following his second term was governor, he served as president of Drew University for 15 years until he retired in 2005.
