Thomas Sternhold (c. 15001549) was the principal author of the first English metrical version of the Psalms, originally attached to the Prayer-Book as augmented by John Hopkins. He was a groom of the robes to Henry VIII and Edward VI.

  • The Lord descended from above
    And bow’d the heavens high;
    And underneath his feet he cast
    The darkness of the sky.

    On cherubs and on cherubims
    Full royally he rode;
    And on the wings of all the winds
    Came flying all abroad.
    • A Metrical Version of Psalm 104, reported in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. (1919).
