Story quotes[edit]

I didn't know it then... ...but Haskell was obsessed with saving the forest.

The following story quotes are derived from the narrative of the protagonist, Danni. Each is written as part of a first-person narrative.

  • I kept telling myself that it was just temporary. Mom would change her mind about Hank, and then we'd move out of here. Then again, that's what I kept telling myself when Dad left. It's just temporary. He'll be back. But of course, he never came back.
    • Danni uncomfortably adjusts to moving in to the home of Hank and Haskell.
  • He seemed so brave to me. Suffering so much... ...but keeping it all locked up inside. I was seriously crushing on him now.
    • Danni acknowledges her budding romantic infatuation with Haskell.
  • I didn't know it then... ...but Haskell was obsessed with saving the forest. He said that logging companies were chopping down thousands of acres in Elkridge. Destroying the ecosystem. And no one was stopping them. That's why he spiked trees. To save the forest.
    • Danni discovers Haskell's ecotage activities.
The trees were on fire. Like torches in the night. The flames leapt higher and higher--
  • The trees were on fire. Like torches in the night. The flames leapt higher and higher-- Orange, red, yellow-- Mom and I sat there, watching the mountain burn.
    • Danni witnesses the destruction of a mountain forest by a wildfire during the thematic climax.
  • Sometimes, you have to do something extreme for people to take notice. That's what Haskell told me. It's true. But here's what's also true: Sometimes, when you cross that line... ...you can never go back.
    • Danni adjusts to a new life during the story's denouement.
