Add topicAttributed
[edit]Does Attributed mean the opposite of Verified or does it mean that quotes under Attributed have never been said by the person but are alleged to be said by that person? What about a Unverified section then? 80.143.246.58 16:25, 6 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- We have been using the term "Verified" to designate any quotes for which sources have been cited, and "Attributed" to designate those for which they haven't. It is perhaps not the ideal designation but it is workable system. On some pages there have been created a further designations of quotes ABOUT the subject, which I think is a good idea, and designations of "Probably Spurious" which I have used on at least one occasion (in the page for Thomas Jefferson where the "quotation" was almost certainly not genuine, and I felt clear indication of that was appropriate. —Kalki
This dialog is somewhat dated... for "Sourced" became the preferred term here, which declares a specific work which can be checked, rather than "Verified" which implies a far greater level of rigorous investigation and certainty about any sources cited, than can usually be properly claimed. ~ Kalki 16:10, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
Reorganized and expanded
[edit]I've reorganized this guideline and expanded it a bit to go into a little more detail on what these headings mean, how to know where to put a particular quote based on the source information available, when to move quotes between sections, where the "Verified" and "Attributed" headings come from, and how the latter is being reused today. I've also added some examples and other specifics. I did it intially to help editors I'm about to advise to read it, but I also felt it was a good opportunity to move toward our revision goal. I'd like feedback on the changes and any other revisions that folks might think useful for editors who are not familiar with this subject. Thanks. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 04:24, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Update needed
[edit]This guideline needs to be updated or reclassified as a historical document. It does not yet reflect the deprecation of unsourced quotations. 121a0012 05:33, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
