Zatch Bell!

Zatch Bell!, known in Japan as Konjiki no Gash Bell! (anime) and Konjiki no Gash! (manga) (金色のガッシュベル! Konjiki no Gasshu Beru! literally translates to "Golden Gash Bell!"), is a shōnen manga series by Makoto Raiku, which has been adapted as an anime TV series by Toei Animation. The series follows a tournament in which mystical beings called Mamodo are partnered with humans to battle to become Mamodo King.

Season 1

The Lightning Boy from Another World! [1.01]

Kiyo: I have no intention of being tutored! Especially by a puny brat like you! Zacker, or whatever your name is! [accidentally activates the first spell]

Zatch: He is coming! The only reason Kiyo isn't here is cuz he had to go to the bathroom, yeah!

Suzy: Yeah that's it!

[Kiyo, who has been moved by Zatch's speech up to this point, is disgusted]

Zatch: He had 2 helpings of meatloaf for lunch and he had to go really really bad!

The Dark Mamodo [1.05]

Sherry: This time we'll let you go, but we'll definitely be back for the book again. Until that time comes, take care of that book and don't lose. Understand? We won't forgive you if you lose to someone other than us. We shall meet again, Mamodo of the red book.

Botanical Madness [1.07]

Haru: [about the Rashield] How can they still cast the spell!

Kiyo: So you guys know how it feels when you hurt others!

[Sugino's book is burned]

Sugino: Aah! :[vanishes to the Mamodo World]

Haru: Aah! All that training for nothing!

A Kind Mamodo, Kolulu [1.08]

Kolulu: Goodbye Zatch. Goodbye Kiyo. If the king of our world was a benevolent king, maybe we wouldn't have to come here and fight in the first place.

Zatch: [tearfully] Yeah, maybe you're right. You are right. That's just what the Mamodo King should be, good and kind. Why not? You're exactly right, Kolulu. And I swear, if I win this battle, that's just the kind of king I'll be!

Kolulu: I know you will, Zatch. [disappears]

The Third Spell [1.09]

Zatch: Kiyo, remember what that mean old Mamodo Brago called me? He said I was a weakling? What if he's right? What if I can't become stronger?

Kiyo: What if, what if, what if my aunt had a mustache? She'd be my uncle. Listen you just had an off day alright? Don't worry about it.

Zatch: You ok, Kiyo?

Kiyo: Uh...yeah, sure. No worries. I just took a small explosion to the body and everything hurts. Other than that, I'm fine.

The Invincible Folgore [1.11]

Suzy: [After Kiyo falls on his imposter, to Kiyo] I didn't know you had a twin.

Kiyo: NO! CLEARLY HE'S A FAKE! DON'T YOU SEE ANYTHING STRANGE!? The nose, the nose, THE NOSE! [screen goes between Kiyo and imposter] My nose, his nose.

Zatch and Suzy: OH!

Kiyo: WHADDYA MEAN OH!?

Zatch: Heh heh heh, I knew it, heh, I'm just playing, heh heh heh heh, I would never mistake your face Kiyo.

Kiyo: I WAS RIGHT UP THERE! I SAW YOU!

Suzy: [crying] Oh no! Does that mean you really don't think I'm pretty?

Kiyo: IS THAT ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY SUZY!?

Fake Kiyo: Zatch, buddy pal! I'm the real Kiyo! So where's the book! Tell me, quick!

Kiyo: GAME OVER YOU LOSER! [Punches Fake Kiyo's head]

Fake Kiyo: OW! THAT HURT! OH!

Kiyo: Dork...

Kanchome: [Fake Kiyo transforms into Kanchome] Hey you meanie, why'd you hit me? You didn't have to go and do that.

The Tomboy and the Popstar [1.14]

Maruss: This is the place, Rembrant.

Rembrant: Finding a Mamodo is ever so much easy when their parnter's a famous singer. Hee hee hee.

Maruss: Yeah.

Maruss: And I'm glad to finally see you again. He he he he he he he he.

Tia: Me too. I'm so lonely I've been all byself ever since I got here. And I haven't been able to find a human partner yet.

Maruss: Really?

Tia: Huh? Maruss, what's wrong?

Maruss: Well, Tia, I've finally found you.

Tia: Maruss!

Maruss: Your partner's on stage, and the show won't be over for quite a while. Which means that at the moment, your spells are totally useless. [Tia tries to run away] Go on! Go ahead, Tia! Run! I don't care; but if you do, I'll attack all those fans out there!

Tia: No, not that! Leave them alone!

Maruss: The last time we saw each other, you got away which was aggravating to say the least, but you won't escape this time. We're going to defeat you right here and now.

Zatch: That book! Is that a Mamodo?

Tia: Then, promise me this: if you defeat me, you leave Megumi alone and let her do the show! She's my friend! She's risked my life for me! So please, I'm begging you!

Zatch: Ah!

Maruss: Ha! You're begging me? How very touching! Well, in that case, there's going to be a slight changing plan. I'm gonna take my time destroying you, and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it! [Tia cries] Ha ha! Once, I'm done with you, I'll wreak such havoc in that auditorium; it will be empty in no time! [Tia cries even louder]

Rembrandt: Garon!

Megumi: I accept your challenge! Go ahead! Cast spells to your hearts content!

Maruss: "To my hearts content", eh? Sounds good to me. I'm quite fond of this one; it's one of my favorites!

Rembrandt: Ei Garon! [tries to attack with a metal chain iron ball]

Tia: Megumi, give me a defense spell!

Megumi: Seioshi!

Maruss: That's it! [grabs the chain, Tia and Megumi sees the spike ball and hits them, he cackles]

Megumi: It can't be!

Tia: From beneath!

Maruss: I must admit your defensive spells are very strong indeed. However, they only work on what's above the ground. They're really quite useless against an attack that comes from below the service!

A New Pledge Between Zatch and Tia [1.15]

Kiyo: That's perfect! We blew them out of the building. Find a place to hide and stay out of sight. Don't worry. We'll keep these two from getting inside the auditorium!

Maruss: You lily-livered little wuss! I warned you not to interfere and you did it anyway! So now you're gonna get what you deserved you're going down!

Rembrant: Garon!

Kiyo: Okay Zatch, this is it! Zaker!

Maruss: Blast it! Why am I have so much trouble getting rid of this little nerd?

Kiyo: We nailed them with three Zaker spells and still haven’t beaten ‘em. On the other hand, he’s used up so much power defending himself; he can barely stand. Which means it’s time for the ultimate attack! We’ll hit ‘em with everything we got from point-blank range. I want you to build as much possible, then I want you to hit him all at once as if you’re setting on an explosion.

Zatch: Gotcha!

Kiyo: I know you can do it, Zatch. You’ve dodged and repelled every attack he’s thrown at you. So charge ‘em head on, then grab him and hold him ‘till I cast the spell! [Zatch charges at Maruss]

Maruss: You little weasel!

Rembrandt: Ganzu Garon! [Maruss attacks Zatch but dodges]

Kiyo: Rashield time? No, not quite yet.

Maruss: What’s this? [smiles and fires]

Kiyo: All right! [Maruss’ spike ball hits Zatch]

Tia: Zatch!

Maruss: Mutch better. Argh!

Zatch: [angrily] Oh yeah?!

Maruss: Darn it! Why do you keep interfering?! Why are you protecting them?! This fight has nothing to do with you! Besides, what good is it gonna do?! Even if you protect them from me, sooner or later, you'll have to fight them yourself!

Zatch: Maybe we will be enemies someday, but for now... I'm not gonna let this guy hurt you again! [Maruss uses Ei Garon and Zatches dodges] Tia was crying! Crying so hard! When she pleaded and begged you not to mess up the concert! Remember?

Maruss: [yelling] BE QUIET!! [throws his Ei Garon at Zatch, but grabs it]

Zatch: But you sneered and said you attacked the concert as soon as you finished her off! [Maruss gets scared] Cruelty like that is unforgivable! I'm gonna stop you Maruss once and for all! [breaks the chain of the Ei Garon]

Kiyo: Just a little closer! When you are as close as you can get, we'll attack!

Maruss: I can't believe he still thinks he can defeat me! Let's fry this little twerp, Rembrandt!

Rembrandt: Gigano Garanzu! [Maruss' Gigano Garanzu is the shape of a Giant Drill, Zatch screams]

Kiyo: That spell's holding him back! Darn it, I can't use Rashield until-

Megumi: Ma Seshield! [Tia steps in and defends Zatch with her spell until the Gigano Garansu tries to pierce it, but the Gigano Garanzu breaks into pieces, Maruss looks confused, the Ma Seshield wears out and revealed to be Tia]

Maruss: Grr! [he tries to punch Tia] You little freak! [Zatch grabs Maruss' arms by pinning him] Huh?

Kiyo: Time for our next move: Zaker! [Zatch blasts Maruss] And this is checkmate: Zaker! [Zatch blasts Maruss once more, his shirt get torn, Rembrant growls, Tia and Megumi cheer] Way to go! [Zatch pants as Maruss falls over] Good work Zatch!

Tia: Incredible! He actually did it! He defeated Maruss! Is that really Zatch? The little weakling I grew up with? [Zatch pants more, Maruss opens his eyes]

Maruss: [loses his temper] ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!! I'M NOT ABOUT TO LET MYSELF BE DEFEATED BY AN OUTCAST WEAKLING LIKE YOU!!!

Tia: He still has that much power left?

Maruss: I'M GOING TO WIN!!! I'M GONNA BE KING!!! HOW DARE YOU DEFY ME YOU LOWLY OUTCAST SCUM!!! COMPARED TO ME, YOU'RE JUST A FRIGHTENED MOUSE TREMBLING IN FEAR OF MY POWER LIKE TIA!!!

Tia: Liar!

Maruss: REMBRANT, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!? ATTACK THEM AGAIN AT ONCE!!!

Rembrant: Garon!

[Maruss launches Garon to try to attack Tia and Zatch]

Kiyo: You’re rotten to the core you monster! Zatch and Tia aren’t lowly or less than you! In fact, they’re quite the opposite! [Tia and Zatch dodge the Garon spell]

Maruss: DRAT!!! [his Garon spell vanishes] THEY DODGED MY ATTACK AGAIN!!!

Kiyo: You see, you shouldn’t ever tell anyone you’re better than they are. Because those you belittle are the very ones who will defeat you! Zaker!

Maruss: [Zatch blasts Maruss for the last time] AAAAAAHH!!!!!

[Rembrant falls over, Maruss who is now on fire falls to the ground, and his book is on fire too, sending him back to the Mamodo World]

Maruss: Ugh! NOOOOO!!!!

Tia: Zatch, when you met Kiyo you met a good person. I think I understand Zatch has gotten so strong.

Rembrant: Uhh... uhh... aah... aah... aah... [Rembrant runs off]

The Invulnerable Robnos [1.16]

Kiyo: [Reading from a note] You have the statue, I have the girl. Zatch and the owner of the book better come to warehouse number 8 in Mochinoki harbor by 3:00 pm or the girl will be in even more trouble... hmm...hmm. WHAT!? BY 3:00 PM!? [Looks at clock] AAH! THAT'S IN 10 MINUTES!

Zatch: Sorry I didn't tell you sooner Kiyo, but I've been busy all day. My favorite soap opera ran a special wedding episode.

Kiyo: SUZY WAS KIDNAPPED AND YOU WERE WATCHING SOAPS!?

Zatch: Don't worry. The same thing happened to the bride and they rescued her.

Kiyo: FORGET THE SOAP OPERA! WE ONLY GOT 10 MINUTES!

Robnos: I am Robnos, an unbeatable Mamodo and I sculpt in my spare time.

Kiyo: Eh?

Robnos:I also really enjoy singing but mostly I like picking on weak opponents. The statue gift worked perfectly and put me in a great mood. In fact, I feel like singing about it. [singing] You two guys are gonna lose / cause when I fight, I autocruise / I am so strong. You are so weak. / Surrender your book!

The Flowers of Evil [1.20]

Kiyo: [seeing Baltro's true form offscreen] That's his Mamodo? That's Baltro?

[Baltro is revealed to be puny]

Zatch: He's surprisingly...

Kiyo: Small.

Apollo, the Free Traveler [1.24-25]

Apollo: Looks like it's time for me and Rops to finally go. Wherever the wind takes us in this big great wide wonderful world of ours.

Kiyo: Will Zatch and I ever see you again?

Apollo: Well I certainly hope so, Kiyo.

Kiyo: Yeah, in a rematch.

Apollo: Yeah.

Zatch: Goodbye, Rops and Apollo.

Danny Boy [1.27]

Danny: You guys stay here 'til I wrap this up.

Zatch: Okay.

Mr. Goldo: All right, but watch yourself, Danny Boy.

Danny: [angry] Danny! For the last time, just Danny!! [jumps and attacks the crooks]

Crook 1: Ugh, this kid's too fast!

Zatch and Tia: A Fierce Combination [1.30]

Purio: Well aren't you the cutest little thing? Say, how about after I'm king, I'll make you my favorite girlfriend out of the hundred or so I plan to have.

Tia: [strangles him] IF YOU THINK YOU'LL BE KING, YOU'RE CRAZY AND EVEN CRAZIER TO THINK I'LL BE YOUR GIRLFRIEND!

Tia: What do you mean I can't ride because I'm too small? Megumi, bang me on the head so I can get a lump that would make me tall enough!

Sunset Soaked in Tears [1.34]

Shion: No! The book! [Nya's spell book is on fire]

Zatch: Huh?

Kiyo: Her spellbook!

Shion: It's ruined! Gone forever! Nya!

Nya: Meow...

Shion: You have to go back to the Mamodo World! It's not fair! Don't go! [crying] Stay here! No! No! No! This can't be happening!

The Final Mirror Battle [1.35]

Kiyo: What are you so happy about?

Grisor: Believe it or not, it's actually hard to go easy on you guys!

Kiyo: What do you mean?

Dr. Hakase: Ha ha! He means that the power of the magic mirror is too strong for you.

Grisor: I'm still only using the fraction of the power I am capable of.

Dr. Hakase: [laughing maniacally]

Kiyo: Just tell me why!

Dr. Hakase: Huh?

Kiyo: Why do you need things like the magic mirror? And why did you intentionally hurt...Shion and her friend Nya!?

Dr. Hakase: Heh heh heh heh. Alright, I'll tell you the truth as a going away present. It's because Grisor was once a little weakling like Zatch. He knew it was forbidden to use it in the Mamodo World. He also knew that there was no way he would even been standing there at the end of the battle. So Grisor took the mirror and brought it to the human world for the battle.

Kiyo: What!? So Grisor is the one who stole the magic mirror?

Dr. Hakase: Hah hah hah hah hah hah! And who says crime doesn't pay? Unfortunately, the mirror broke between the human world and the Mamodo World. It split into three pieces scattering across the planet. And you know the rest of the story, we tricked that foolish girl with my scientific knowledge and Grisor's skillful powers of persuasion and we've finally obtained all three pieces of the mirror.

Kiyo: For someone supposedly so smart, you don't listen very well. That's not what I asked you!

Dr. Hakase: Huh?

Grisor: Huh?

Kiyo: Why did you get Shion and Nya involved? Shion, the only way she wanted was to be with Nya! You just toyed with her heart! And you guys took away...HER BEST FRIEND!

Battle in Hong Kong [1.37-38]

Wonrei: Thank you, Li-En. From now on I will always protect you. And together we will walk on the path toward becoming the king.

Invincible Kanchome [1.41]

Kanchome: That's the spirit Folgore! Think of all you fans!

Fredo: [about Iron Man Folgore] Man, I really hate that song!

Parco Folgore: Oh...

Fredo: Let's finish them, before they sing em again.

Fredo: Are you kidding me? Well Bago, what's wrong? Don't tell you can't tell me which one is the real one.

Kanchome: [as Fredo] Of course he can, he's a smart Mamodo. He knows who his master is.

Bago: Aw! Uh! Huh?

Fredo: COME ON ARE YOU BLIND OR WHAT!? ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT HIM TO SEE IF HE'S A FAKE!

Bago: Whoa. Uh...

Kanchome: [as Fredo] Now now, don't let him confuse you, just look deep in your heart and ask yourself which one is always loved and respected you like the son he never had.

Fredo: THIS IS INSANE! JUST CRUSH HIM YOU IDIOT!

Bago: Huh? Who's an idiot!? [punches Fredo] I know who’s the real master. Youse nice to Bago.

Kanchome: [as Fredo] Ah ha ha. I know he couldn’t fool a smart lizard like you.

Fredo: [angrily] You’re gonna pay for that, duck-face! Bareido! [Bago blasts spikes at Kanchome, his Fredo disguise wears off]

Parco Folgore: Kanchomè, are you okay, bambino?

Kanchome: Almost had him.

Coldhearted Foes [1.42]

Apollo: Hey what's the matter, Rops? [he looks at Zeno]

Zatch: Ha ha ha ha haa ha ha!

Apollo: It's Zatch! Hey Zatch! Wait up!

Zeno: You've got the wrong guy.

Apollo: Huh?

Zeno: How dare you mistake me for that sniveling little clown of a Mamodo.

Apollo: It's not Zatch. But it just look like him, there's an evil in his eyes that Zatch doesn't have, and if he's not Zatch. Then who is he?

Zeno: So tell me. Have you seen Zatch lately? Ha! I'm just asking if you destroyed his book.

Apollo: No. I didn't do it. He and Kiyo were a powerful team, and we settle for a tie.

Zeno: Ha! That's so idiotic. You say that team's powerful. Then you and little squirt must be the weakest team ever. Now I understand how a loser like Zatch keep surviving. He must be fighting lame opponents.

Apollo: You don't seem so tough to me.

Zeno: Huh?

Apollo: Let's go Rops. I've had enough of this guy.

Rops: Cau.

Zeno: Don't you want ta battle?

Apollo: No thanks. We'd like to travel in peace. I'm not interesting in someone fighting like you.

Zeno: Naive. You guys are so naive. You're acting like you had a choice. When I need a couple of guys as naive as you two. It puts me in the mood to destroy your book.

Apollo: This looks like one fight I can't back out of.

Invitation to a Duel [1.44]

Bari: [mistaking Naomi for Zatch, who she's bullying] This is the mighty Zatch, this tiny female?

Zatch vs. Bari [1.45]

Gustav: Bari, what kind of king do you want to be? [Bari cannot answer] To you, the battle for king is simply defeating all your opponents. You've put no thought into it, so someone like you with such immature ideas can't hit someone like Zatch whose eyes have such true conviction behind them.

Bari: Guess again! [once more cannot bring himself to punch Zatch] Are you kidding me? You think I'm afraid of hitting a little runt like him because he's kind?!

Gustav: All right then Bari, let me ask you the same question again. What kind of king are you going to be?

Bari: A strong king. Strong enough to destroy anyone who challenges me with just one strike from my mighty fist! The most powerful king ever, who can't be beaten!

Gustav: Heh, a better answer. Very good. You're starting to put some thought behind your goal.

Bari: Look Zatch, and you better listen too, Kiyo. I'm going to let you two go this time. One day we'll have a face off of the kind king against the strong king! That's when we'll finally know once and for all who is best for the Mamodo World! Until then, I'll leave your book without destroying it.
