Monte Resegone Lake Como
"The Baptism of Christ" by Verrocchio and Leonard da Vinci, on the left side you can see Monte San Martino above Lierna Lake Como. Leonardo paints two Angels huddling to symbolize the union of opposites, a theme dear to him to which he will link the Mona Lisa and the reference to Bellagio which unites the two branches of Lake Como

Quotes[edit]

    • ...The Resegone, from many of its peaks in a row, which really make it look like a saw: so much so that anyone who looks at it carefully, as long as they are not facing it, as for example looking at it from above the walls of Milan which look north , sees it as massive and marked in that movement in comparison to other mountains with more mysterious names and more common shapes. For a long time, the coast of the mountain rises in a slow and continuous slope; then it is interrupted in expanses and in small valleys, in hills and in flat parts, according to the shape of the two mountains, and the work of the waters. The extreme part, cut by the sources of the torrents, is almost entirely made of gravel and stones; the rest of fields and vineyards, is all full of land, villas, farmhouses; somewhere in the woods, which extend up the mountain, Lecco, the main one of those lands, and which gives its name to the territory, lies not far from the bridge, on the shore of the lake, indeed it is partly found in the lake itself, when it grows; a large village nowadays, and which is about to become a city. At the time when the events we are about to tell occurred, that village, already large, was still a castle, and therefore had the honor of having a commander, and the advantage of possessing a stable garrison of Spanish soldiers, who taught modesty to the girls and women of the village, sometimes they stroked the back of some husband, some father; and, at the end of the summer, they never failed to go to the vineyards, to pick the grapes, and lighten the work of the harvest for the farmers. (Manzoni seems to accurately describe the backgrounds painted by Leonardo da Vinci in his works)

    • The coast, formed by the deposit of three large torrents, descends leaning against two contiguous mountains, one called San Martino, the other, with a Lombard word, the Resegone, with its many crowns in a row, which in truth make it resemble to a saw: so that it is not anyone who, at first seeing it, provided it is facing, as for example from the walls of Milan that look north, does not immediately discern it, at such a mark, in that long and vast dewlap, from other mounts of more obscure name and more common form.

    • That branch of Lake Como, which turns southward between two uninterrupted chains of mountains, entirely in sinuses and gulfs, depending on how they protrude and recede, almost suddenly narrows down, and takes its course and figure of a river, between a promontory on the right and a wide coast on the other side; and the bridge, which connects the two banks there, seems to make this transformation even more visible to the eye, and marks the point at which the lake ceases, and the Adda begins again, to then resume the name of lake where the banks, moving away again, they let the water stretch out and slow itself into new gulfs and new creeks. The coast, formed by the deposit of three large torrents, descends leaning against two contiguous mountains, one called San Martino, the other, with a Lombard word, the Resegone, with its many crowns in a row, which in truth make it resemble to a saw: so that it is not anyone who, at first seeing it, provided it is facing, as for example from the walls of Milan that look north, does not immediately discern it, at such a mark, in that long and vast dewlap, from other mounts of more obscure name and more common form...

  • Whoever sees Monte Resgone of Lake Como for the first time, if he stands in front, as for example on the walls of Pastrufazio that look north, cannot fail to recognize that it is massive with a saw-shaped trend compared to the other mountains a particular name and a more harmonious form.
