Puss Gets the Boot
Puss Gets the Boot is a 1940 American one-reel animated cartoon and is the first short in the Tom and Jerry cartoon series, though the duo aren't identified as such in this short. It was directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, and produced by Rudolf Ising and Fred Quimby. As was the practice of MGM shorts at the time, only Rudolf Ising is credited. It was released to theaters on February 10, 1940 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

[edit]- Mammy-Two-Shoes: JASPER?! JASPER! Mmm-mm, that no good cat! [Jasper attempts to tiptoe away but is soon nabbed under Mammy's broom.] Just a minute, you good-for-nothin' cheap fur coat! [Jasper Shrieks and Squeals] Now would you just look? Just look at that mess you made! Now understand this, Jasper. If you breaks one more thing, you is going out-- O-W-T, out! That's clear, ain't it? One more breakin', and you's goin' out. Now get out of my sight 'fore I gets mad!
- Mammy-Two-Shoes: [about Jasper (Tom)] Any more breakin', and that cat's goin' outta here. [Just like June Foray]
- Jerry: [in high-pitched voice in speed] Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I hope and hope my soul He'll take. Amen.
- [Jinx throws one more plate down to the ground, and it breaks.]
- Mammy-Two-Shoes: Jasper? Jasper! Man, you is practically out now!
- [Mammy Two-Shoes enters the living room and hits Jasper.]
- [Jasper Shrieks and Squeals]
- [Jinx laughs silently and enters his mouse hole.]
- Mammy-Two-Shoes: [grunts] And when I says "out", Jasper, I means out. O-U-W-T, OUT!
- [Mammy Two-Shoes throws Jasper out of the house off-screen. Jinx waves to him, sticks his tongue out and puts a sign that says HOME SWEET HOME in front of his hole, and enters it]

Trivia
[edit]In the original dub, Mammy Two Shoes spelled "out" as "O-W-T" and "O-U-W-T", but the edited version used the correct spelling, probably to avoid racial stereotypes.
