Talk:Islamic State
Add topicOrganisation's name
[edit]Prior to 4 January 2015, the opening read as follows:
The Islamic State (IS), formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL; Arabic acronym: داعش Dāʿish) or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is a Sunni jihadist group in the Middle East. Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah, a leading Islamic authority in Egypt, advised Muslims to stop calling the group Islamic State and instead refer to it as Al-Qaeda Separatists in Iraq and Syria (QSIS) due to the militant group's un-Islamic character. ...
On 4 January 2015, Legacypac made an edit good-faith, removing the words "Islamic State (IS), formerly the," leaving the introduction to read as follows:
TheIslamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL; Arabic acronym: داعش Dāʿish) or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), is a Sunni jihadist group in the Middle East. Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah, a leading Islamic authority in Egypt, advised Muslims to stop calling the group Islamic State and instead refer to it as Al-Qaeda Separatists in Iraq and Syria (QSIS) due to the militant group's un-Islamic character. ...
He made this edit on the following grounds: "remove rejected name".
According to the Wikipedia article on this subject, the organisation officially calls itself the "Islamic State", and has done so since 29 June 2014.
Also according to the Wikipedia article on this subject, "the new name has been widely criticized and condemned, with the UN, various governments, and mainstream Muslim groups refusing to use it."
It stands to reason that since the organisation calls itself the "Islamic State", the name "Islamic State" should at least appear somewhere in the introduction. My main recommendation is that the edit made by Legacypac in good faith be reverted, and I make this recommendation in the grounds that, although many object to the name "Islamic State", and perhaps have good reason to, it is nevertheless the organisation's official name, and it ought not be the policy of Wikipedia or Wikiquote to take sides on what is or is not the most appropriate name by which to call this particular organisation.
However, I also have a secondary recommendation, which I suspect might be more popular. My secondary recommendation is that we add the following sentence (lifted directly from the Wikipedia article) to the Wikiquote introduction:
In June 2014, the group renamed itself the Islamic State (IS), but the new name has been widely criticized and condemned, with the UN, various governments, and mainstream Muslim groups refusing to use it.
Please share any criticisms, either positive or negative, regarding either of these recommendations.

- Seeing as how there have been no arguments against my recommendations, I will now proceed with implementing the revision discussed above. I will implement the secondary recommendation I made. If you believe my primary recommendation is still superior to my secondary recommendation, please share your thoughts below. We could always revert from my secondary recommendation to my primary recommendation if there is support for it.
Cheers,

- I'm ok with that - so long as Wikipedia does not refer to the terror group primarily as Islamic State, we can mention they use the name. Legacypac (talk) 16:52, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
