[edit]- "There's no such thing as a simple cache bug."
- "Caches aren't architecture, they're just optimization."
- "Sockets are the X windows of IO interfaces."
- "Sometimes when you fill a vacuum, it still sucks."
- "Unix never says 'please'."
I moved the above quotes here because these discussion comments can hardly be considered notable quotes. -- Mdd (talk) 14:27, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- I thought fortune files are supposed to be collections of quotations. I don't see how these are less notable than the ones in the article. jni (talk) 15:00, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks Jni, for you comment. You could be right. However first, I have traced the source of the first 4 quotes of the article, and I had serious doubts about the notability of these quotes. They seem to be just random remarks in a discussion forum.
- And second, I am not familiar with the source of the above quotes, the http://plan9.bell-labs.com/sources/plan9/sys/games/lib/fortunes. I guess I should double check these quotes one by one. -- Mdd (talk) 16:38, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
- Yes jni, but they are unsourced attributions. Perhaps his involvement with the project lends some credence to the attribution.
It looks like the source text is a table of random "fortune cookies" that are displayed by the Plan 9 system in conjunction with error messages. I am unsure about whether these quips used as inside jokes are notably quotable. ~ Ningauble (talk) 16:49, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

[edit]- "Not only is UNIX dead, it's starting to smell really bad."
- "Eventually, I decided that thinking was not getting me very far and it was time to try building."
