- Thank you for your suggestion. I have now added that statement to the page, but am not surprised it was not already there, because though the statement was reported in 1936, there has been no indications of it being republished or on the internet at all until republished last month on the page youi have linked to. ~ ♞☤☮♌Kalki·†·⚓⊙☳☶⚡ 08:16, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
"A writer is somebody..." quotation
[edit]I liked the quote "A writer is somebody for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people" so much I decided to run it down. (I'm an academic librarian--this is what we do.)
Wikiquote, and many other appearances, cite to a collection, Essays of Three Decades (1947), not to a specific essay. I requested a copy from my library and took a look. The location wasn't obvious.
HathiTrust provides searchable (but not browsable) online access to the book, at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.32106002239132
When I tried searching for the quotation, and fragments from it, I was unable to find it. I was, however, able to search for and find random strings from the book, to verify that the search worked. I even checked each of the 19 times the phrase "a writer" appeared in the book--no dice.
So I wrote an email to the info address of the German Thomas Mann Society in Lübeck (http://www.thomas-mann-gesellschaft.de/).
I will see what I find out. I'm watching this page. And I'm setting an alarm for 30 days, to remind myself to come back here and move that quotation into an "Attributed" section.
