The Promised Neverland (Japanese: 約束のネバーランド, Hepburn: Yakusoku no Nebārando) is a Japanese manga series written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu. It was serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 2016 to June 2020, with its chapters collected in 20 tankōbon volumes. In North America, Viz Media licensed the manga for English release and serialized it on their digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The series follows a group of orphaned children in their plan to escape from their orphanage, after learning the dark truth behind their existence and the purpose of the orphanage.
The Promised Neverland was adapted into an anime television series produced by CloverWorks and broadcast on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. The series' first season ran for 12 episodes from January to March 2019. A second season ran for 11 episodes from January to March 2021. A live-action film adaptation was released in December 2020. Amazon Studios is also developing an American live-action series.
Season 2 : Episode 7[edit]
Emma : They were afraid? There was nothing to be scared about. All her blood did was make it so they didn't have to eat humans anymore.
Ray : That's the problem.
Emma : How?
Ray : The Royals and Aristocracy, they control the meat supply with the farm system. Get It? With that they can pick who gets the meat, how much they get and when. That gives them the power to rule over their subjects. Can't give that up, so they had to kill them. Isn't that right?
Norman : [nods]
Ray : Maybe The Promise wasn't about keeping peace, it was about the Royals grabbing all the power. It's easier to control their people if they control the meat. Anyone who gets in their way has to die.
Emma : That's awful.
Norman : It's not surprising though. In the end everyone is out for themselves. Not everyone is as kind and virtuous as you Emma.
Season 2 : Episode 9[edit]
Norman : Emma will never change. With a heart as big as hers, I had zero doubt she'd save everyone. I should've known she'd save the Demons too. We have this information now because she chose kindness over revenge. And thanks to her choice we have hope.
