Welcome

[edit]

Hi Deborahjay, WELCOME!

If we had a good welcome template I would use it, but in any case I still like to welcome you Too the English Wikiquote. Ottawahitech (talk) 13:51, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the welcome, @Ottawahitech:! The Wikiquote project is certainly one of the most useful in terms of valuable content. While I'm unlikely to have anything to add in the foreseeable future due to priorities (largely dictated by the ongoing war where I live), I'd like to get more familiar with the WQ structure. For example - per the item for which you contacted me in Wikidata - how to treat a quotation on a topic of note but attributed to a person not meeting the WP notability standard (in the presenting language). It seems reasonable to create a Wikidata item offering background on the person, but as the Wiki Quote appears only by topic, it can't be linked to the person's WD item. I'll try to follow up with the Project Chat in WQ. Let me know if you get this clarified. Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 12:08, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wow, I am really glad to hear that "The Wikiquote project is certainly one of the most useful in terms of valuable content".
As far as not being able to contribute because of an ongoing war where you live, I for one would be grateful for any knowledge you can bring to the enwq whose experienced contributors come daily mainly from the US and the UK, I think Ottawahitech (talk) 21:13, 22 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
re: largely dictated by the ongoing war where I live,
I just discovered that you already have an attached Userpage that tells me that you live in Israel, and that you translate from Hebrew to English. I see that you have helped wikipedias in Africa and from your username I also assume that you are a woman. I am already starting to build a picture of you in my head, and I can see you can become a very valuable asset at the #shesaid campaign. Ottawahitech (talk) 13:44, 23 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question regarding your change at #shesaid redlists

[edit]

At #shesaid redlists you changed:

  1. Deborah J. Oyer ( on wd)

to

  1. Deborah J. Oyer (d:Q131191882)

I am curious to find out what your rationale was. BTW I would normallypost this question on the talkpage of the project, but for political reasons that will take to long to explain, I thought it would be easier to get a quick reply here. I am trying to make the redlists easier to navigate and easier to find information for those keen on adding new pages to enwq. Ottawahitech (talk) 14:15, 24 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Quite simply: format consistency with other bio pages on these redlists for those with a page in Wikidata. I support conforming to consensus practice and recommend this. Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 16:29, 24 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Peace?

[edit]

earlier today I added a quote to the Middle east page here saying CNN announced that a ceasefire has been signed. What do you think? Is this god or bad? Just curious. I hope you don't mind my asking this question publicly. cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:17, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don't yet know the guidelines in this project, but reportage by a news source doesn't seem to be a quote. Perhaps a page (?) on "November 2024 ceasefire in the w:Israel–Hezbollah conflict (2023–present)" giving a statement from each of the involved parties: leaders of the USA, Israel, Lebanon and of course Hezbollah. What do you think? I do prefer having such discussions on the talk pages for transparency's sake. Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 16:48, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
DO you mean create a new page on this wiki called November 2024 ceasefire in the Israel–Hezbollah conflict (2023–present). BTW I agree let's discuss this on an existing TP- which one? Ottawahitech (talk) 16:58, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
That would be a suggested topical page name for the sort of content I suggested above: quotes from the political and military decision-makers. The publication, e.g. CNN, would be the source where the quote appeared, but attribution to the individual. Does that fit the practice in Wikiquote? Deborahjay (talk) 17:08, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Time. for me to logoff but in answer to:Template:Green: oes that fit the practice in Wikiquote? I don't really know. Have seen this on many existing pages, many that have survived for years, I think? cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:27, 27 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
