Script transcriptions[edit]

Is it really "encyclopedia like" to have the scripts typed out?

Wikiquote is not an encyclopedia, but a quote compendium. But you have a point. We should cite notable excerpts from films, not entire scenes. I've added a {{checkcopyright}} tag to the article to encourage the editors to trim down the material here. Thank you for calling attention to this problem. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 17:38, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it pretty much is just the whole script. though a lot of it is quite funny.--84.19.225.251 17:43, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with this film is that it's so awesome 95% of it deserves to be quoted, and most everyone will agree with that imho 193.77.212.100
I certainly agree that a considerable portion is very quotable. I myself have memorized entire routines. But it's still illegal, and not the purview of Wikiquote, which collects highlights of material, not huge… tracts of quotes. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 14:19, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thing is, most quotes from the film only work as full scenes, so perhaps only a few less scenes should be transcribed here? 193.2.190.226 10:12, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Entire scenes are a no-no, as they can be (and probably are) consider copyrightable comedy routines. (In fact, Monty Python movies tend to be a bunch of skits connected by a story line and some wacky Terry Gilliam animation.) It would be better to select a memorable moment from several scenes than one entire scene. As an example, one might present a moment from "Constitutional Peasant":
[Arthur explains his kingship to a fiercely democratic peasant couple.]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!
Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!
King Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
King Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
King Arthur: Shut up! Will you shut up?!
[Arthur grabs Dennis and shakes him.]
Dennis: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!
(Note the removal of sound effects, which are not necessary to communicate the meaning of the quote, and the addition of a sourcing context line that helps identify what specific shot is described, so that readers can verify the quote.) I know it's not nearly as satisfying as the whole scene, but unlike fan websites, Wikiquote cannot afford to violate fair-use principles. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 12:53, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I had done a bit of trimming down of some of the "less-pithy" and essential quotes when I added a few images to this page recently. I felt there was more trimming that probably should be done, but was not eager to do it. The removals I made were subsequently replaced and more material was added, despite the very large notice declaring concerns that this is becoming so extensive that it is pushing fair use provisions. There is a link to a site with the FULL script, as well as other Monty Python materials in the external links section: Monty Python and the Holy Grail at The Unofficial Monty Python. We certainly do not need to replicate their work and turn this page into a full frickin' script which definitely violates Wikiquote and Wikimedia policies, and we need to trim it down some, not add to it. ~ Kalki 10:29, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have a bit of experience in this particular field.....[edit]

The discussion you are all having about what to include and what not to include for this movie is actually the very reason I have chosen not to include it in my website, MovieSounds.com. This is one of those rare movies that can be quoted from start to finish.

Having said that, however, I have re-evaluated all the quotes that are on the page here, and I think I have a possible solution to the problem.

Remove the "Dialogue" portion of the page and leave only the individual character quotations. Without the endless back and forth dialogue that arguably make this entire movie quotable, you will notice that there are not anywhere near as many lines from the movie that can be included here if there isn't a follow-up line from another character. (ex. Robin and one of his minstrels)

While this doesn't exactly fix the problem as a whole, it does help with making sure wikiquote doesn't turn into a script repository.--Moviesounds 05:44, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I'm going to have a go at snipping out the irrelevant material in the dialogue sections to only the well-known quotes. Fys. “Ta fys aym”. 13:31, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now done at Monty Python and the Holy Grail/temp. Fys. “Ta fys aym”. 00:03, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

too freaking long[edit]

they should have just named this "wikiscript" I think almost the entire movie is on wikiquote. We're not supposed to have an entire movie on here. We're supposed to select the best quotes from the movie and then put them on, NOT THE ENTIRE BLOODY THING!!

You are absolutely correct and there is some work underway to fix this problem. Check out Monty Python and the Holy Grail/temp and if you have comments, leave them on that page's Talk page. ~ UDScott 16:01, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I support the UDScott edition around 30KB+, and propose to replace it with the current 57,874 bytes version. Semiprotection for a certain period may also be helpful. --Aphaia 02:45, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, we could reduce it to notable (or "memorable") quotes, since this article is pretty much a script anyway. There's another article that suffers from this problem: Ed, Edd,n' Eddy. That's a "wiki-script" and the yahoo who edited it probably flunked grammar class. Both of these articles need to be shortened. Instead of just talking about it, we should take action. Besides, I bet the article as copyright violation written all over it. Instead of doing it scene-by-scene, we could do character quotes instead, and have dialogue near the end of it. What say all of you? Link 486 14:42, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds good. Most of our film articles are indeed organized in such a way - character quotes and some distinct dialogs.
So how about replace the version proposed with the current one and re-organize the article? If it is okay, I'd like to do until this weekend. --Aphaia 17:15, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Witch Scene[edit]

I fixed the dialogue, but I am not happy with how it is 3/4 of the scene, even though I don't feel it works if made any shorter. Anyhow, since the dialogue is actually accurate now, and formatted properly, feel free to cut things out. Just don't screw it up. Cgirten 04:39, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since you made a significant addition, your edit was reverted. Thank you for your further trimming, if any. But no thank you for your addition / contribution the whole scene, or extension, as you did. It will be just plainly removed, since it is not the purpose of this website. Thanks. --Aphaia 09:24, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think equally it is not the place of this site to 'paraphrase' scenes. The current rendering of the scene is, very simply, wrong. As per the conclusions in the first item on the talk page, it would be appropriate to select particular portions of the scene in full, but it is not at all appropriate to give without indication an innaccurate rendering in the scene. Doing so is misrepresenting the work of the creators and doing a disservice to them. - 203.158.35.203 16:51, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Noo?[edit]

When Lancelot and Bedevere are talking to the woman to try to find a shrubbery [jarring chord], I'm pretty sure Bedevere says Noo, or Nu, but not No. --67.102.184.26 18:28, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This page was once one of our most highly active, and over-stuffed pages, and it would probably be semi-protected from anonymous IP edits in any case, but having stated that, I will go on to make the point that it currently remains in a far more impoverished state than some of the more reasonable lengths and inclusive lengths it had reached in 2008 around the time when long-term semi-protection was applied, because current officiations have placed limits I consider a bit extreme upon it, resulting in the rather mortifying state of paucity and morbidity which currently exists. If you have any interest in somewhat larger articles less constrained by overly strict regulations, you are invited to register a user name, and become more active here. Perhaps someday the rules can be altered into more relaxed guidelines as once were sufficient, and more activity can occur here without the quote-counting accountancies currently established, by the currently prevailing will of but a few. I do not expect any alleviation to occur any time soon without greater participation of people with more liberal or libertarian and less authoritarian inclinations in this regard. ~ Kalki (talk · contributions) 23:39, 6 December 2011 (UTC) + tweaks[reply]
