People need to quit adding quotes by people who lived before the invention of the gun. I'm pretty sure that Aristotle and the disciple Luke weren't talking about firearms. Quotes going either way politically are fine, but they have to be on topic.

I am personally am a full supporter of individual rights to bear arms, and against most proposals for gun control, but I am placing this quotation here, and am about to remove it from the article as it is very obviously bogus. Talk of prairie wagons by Washington was an obvious clincher, even though much of the other statement is definitely uncharacteristic and unlikely. Awareness of the prairies, let alone the prairie wagons was still a LONG way off in Washington's time.

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon and citizen's firearms are indelibly related. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security, and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable. Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference— they deserve a place of honor with all that's good. When firearms go, all goes— we need them every hour.
Purportedly made in Address to the Second Session of the First United States Congress, January 7, 1790, Boston Independant Chronicle, January 14, 1790, this quote is palpably bogus, as this essay at a pro-gun site makes plain. ~ Achilles 03:08, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Guns can save, guns can kill. It's a debate. JanSmall (anon).

We have the quote "Guns don't kill people, I do." as by Duke Nukem, who was created as a character in '91. But this quote was in the film UHF, which was made in '89. What do the people here think? ~ qqwref 04 June 2006

This article is not neutral at all! And i know it might seem strange that a collection of quotes can be siding whit one of the opinions, since there is no subject, but this one is. there is an overwhelming amount of pro-gun quotations, almost exclusively. The only one that really stands out is Gandhi's quotation, but apart from this, the entire collection feels "pro-gun," and by "pro-gun" I mean pro- the right of anybody to carry lethal weapons without license and in public. I am in no way trying to make anyone delete some quotations, but i really feel the need for some quotes that does not side with the pro-gunners. Someone please add some. Well. yeah I guess it is. Maybe the problem is there are very few good anti-gun quotes.
I certainly can't think of any at the moment that aren't already here...I will admit to some pro-gun bias, but most anti-gun quotes are either on the intellectual level of "OMG think of the children," or quotations of dry statistics (when they can actually find any that support them ;-D ) ...they just aren't very catchy or very clever, which is what you want on a quotations list. -JC

Are there any nonpolitical quotes about guns? 134.240.241.2 15:25, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not on this page, obviously. There is certainly a wealth of quotations in the literature on firearms of all kinds, none of it explicitly political in nature. Much has been written or spoken about these implements and their employment (safe and unsafe, effective and ineffective, properly and with gaudy ineptitude). Consider for example the writings of Jeff Cooper and S.L.A. Marshall. That wealth of observations and recommendations deserves collection in Wikiquote on an entirely separate page - possibly labeled "Firearms" or "Firearms use."
For the sake of improving clarity and utility, I strongly suggest that this Wikiquote page be re-titled "Gun politics" and be linked to and from the Wikipedia page thereupon.
Or we work to balance the page. It has a thorough US bias, written as if the local debate in the USA about gun ownership were the most central issue in the whole world of quotations about guns. For instance, what about the giant guns in Jules Verne's Around the Moon and HG Wells' Things to Come? And all the citations to "unknown" need removing per current practice. Limit of Quotes[edit]

Is having an article about guns okay? If so what is the quote limit for this article?(StarWarsFanBoy 04:02, 31 January 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Cleanup effort[edit]

I will probably tackle attempting to do some cleanup here within the next week or so, if no one else does so. I have a few other priorities today, including starting work on a page I mentioned I would try to do cleanup on today. ~ Kalki (talk · contributions) 22:14, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted quotes[edit]

Most of those that I deleted are of such little notability that I'm not going to bother to list them here.

Here are a couple that could go into Misattributed:

  • Germans who wish to use firearms should join the SS or the SA - ordinary citizens don't need guns, as their having guns doesn't serve the State.
    • This doesn't seem to be an actual quotation. The source appears to be Critical Issues in Biomedical Science (2002), Leland L. Smith, pages 85-86, which precedes the quote with “paraphrasing Heinrich Himmler ca. 1933”.
  • Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons.
    • This seems to be a recent joke (c. 1999), and the attribution to General Macarthur (c. 2003) is spurious.

This Wikiquote section is biased[edit]

Ever time someone puts up a quote here about guns that is either in favour of gun control or dealing with the gun issue from outside the United States, it gets deleted. While I appreciate the need to keep quotes short, Wikiquote is supposed to be reasonably impartial. As it happens, most of this section now reads like a press release from the Gun Owners of America. 79.97.164.232 18:40, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any quotes in particular that you feel are quotable enough to deserve inclusion but which are currently not included?  allixpeeke (talk) 22:59, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced[edit]

  • Guns do not like jokes and do not forgive mistakes. (Russian: Оружие шуток не любит, ошибок не прощает.)
    • Slogan of Soviet Army

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people."[edit]

This famous and pithy adage is one that I believe merits being added to the list.  Unfortunately, I do not know who stated it.  Anybody have an idea?  allixpeeke (talk) 23:03, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(As a side-note, does anybody know any pithy anti-gun adages?  I feel like we gun-rights advocates have a number of pithy phrases, but I can't think of any pithy phrases used by gun-rights opponents.  If you know of any, please suggest them.  allixpeeke (talk) 23:07, 3 February 2015 (UTC))[reply]
