Hunting of the Snark[edit]

I am of course brand new on Wikiquote (though experienced on Wikipedia) so would be grateful for an explanation of the policy here. Lewis Carroll has separate pages for the two Alice books; why should he not also have one for the Hunting of the Snark? I was planning to include quite a few more quotations from that book, enough to justify a separate article.--Poetlister 18:05, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Generally, we prefer to keep books on a page for the author, to the extend feasible. Mostly, this is to "encourage" people not to add too much to each book, which might run into copyright problems. It's not really an official policy, per se, though perhaps it should be. In the particular case of Carroll/Snark, I happened to be going through the "New pages" list and saw that (I didn't realize you'd split it off until after I'd remerged). I figured that since that page only had two quotes, and Carroll's page only had four, there wasn't any good reason to have Snark as a separate page. In the case of Carroll, copyright isn't really a factor (as the work is in the public domain), but we still prefer to keep books (especially shorter ones) with the author to avoid overquoting. —LrdChaos (talk) 19:19, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Louis Louis[edit]

Thanks for your help with Louis 15±1. Was I correct to go the VFD route, or should I have just mentioned the problem to someone like yourself, or would there have been some better way to deal with the problem? "we burn a hot fire here"[edit]

I noticed you put a request for speedy on this. This raises several questions for me, as a newbie sysop, which I hope you will answer.

  1. You're an administrator, if you think it should be speedied why not just delete it?
  2. I notice that "single quote page", "duplicate quote" (the quote is already on Arthur Miller), and "belongs somewhere else" are not explicitly mentioned as criteria for speedy deletion (although they all seem reasonable to me). Is there a certain amount of latitude allowed with speedying, or is there another policy somewhere I should read, or are these things there implicitly if the criteria are interpreted the correct way?
  3. I know we have a strong prejudice, with which I agree, against single-quote articles and subject-written articles (I realize this second case has nothing to do with the article under consideration). But is there some explicit policy against these?

I ask these questions because I hate to keep bringing obvious cases for deletion to VFD, and I especially hate it when people then say these cases should have been speedied. On the other hand, I don't want to abuse my new power to delete things. So help me out please. Thanks. --Ubiquity 16:06, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Tenkaichi 2 quotes[edit]

Mmhm. It's really frickin' odd that the place wasn't flagged before I showed up, huh? I've just been adding and moving quotes and elaborating as to whom they are spoken to.

But, whatever. I'll just undo all my changes and set it back to the way it was. How's that? ~_O Ryan the Game Master 21:46, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Hm. It can be deleted if it must. I don't really care anymore. None of the quotes are memorable to those who haven't played the game or whatever, nor can I think of any. Ryan the Game Master 05:29, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Moving articles requires permissions[edit]

Hi Poetlister, Thanks for answering my move request. Just so you know: The "move" tab does not appear on wikiquote pages as it does for me on on wikipedia. It looks like that function might be locked down so that only administrators can use it. Just to make sure it wasn't a problem with the skin, I tried forging a "move" URL. No dice. "Permissions Errors: You do not have permission to move pages on Wikiquote." --Shunpiker 00:52, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Reading this, I think the problem may be that this function may be restricted for new users. My account was only created within the last 48 hours, so perhaps I will be unembargoed soon. -- Shunpiker 01:19, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

New Year's resolution[edit]

Happy New Year! One of my New Year's resolutions is to finish Wikiquote:Bartlett's 1919 Index - but I can't do it alone. There are 234 red links for which articles need to be created, and 275 blue links for which articles need to be checked. Although I've been trying to get one done each day, lately I have not had time to do even that! Please consider making a commitment to help me keep my resolution by creating or checking one entry on this page per week. Help public domain quotes find their home in 2008! Cheers! Thanks for the welcome. I'm well versed on Wikipedia (where I'm an admin), but I just created this WikiQuote account for kicks. Do you know how I find my edit statistics here, like Wikipedia has Kate's Tool, for example. Useight 23:28, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

British Columbia[edit]

Thank you for your comment on the above new article. Thanks for the offer of assistance to the article about British Columbia. If lyrics and folk songs are OK for quotes, the article now has quotes which mention BC or place names of BC as per conversation at the AFD. There are quite a few more to source from, but thought I would wait for comments before going too far. Kind Regards SriMesh | talk 03:48, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Attributed vs. Unsourced in Benedict Arnold[edit]

I noticed you changed the heading for certain Benedict Arnold quotes from "attributed" to "unsourced". Problem is, those are sourced, there is just less confidence in the sources. BD2412 T 18:09, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

But what if you're happy with the source, but the source is reporting something the person is rumored to have said? I mean, we know what Lincoln said in the Gettysburg address, but we don't know what Benedict Arnold really said on his deathbed. The source is not reliable (and we will never have a "reliable" source on this info), but at the same time, it is clearly demonstrable that the quote has been attributed to Arnold, and is not merely a misattribution to Arnold of something someone else said. That is my quandary! BD2412 T 22:05, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
I can agree with that. BD2412 T 00:54, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

George II[edit]

Another of your excellent articles! A few pernickety points of style:

  1. Royalty should have {{political-stub}} not {{people-stub}}
  2. No need to use DEFAULTSORT when the article title as it stands is hte correct sort; it just increases the nload on the servers
  3. No need to have a British category if you already have a British monarch
  4. Always have a death (or living person) category

Sorry to be a pain, but it's these little details that make the place look smart. Keep up the good work!--Poetlister 20:25, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the appreciation and corrections. I accept all your points – all the faults are due to either ignorance or carelessness. I'd welcome any further nudges in the right direction that might be necessary. Antiquary 18:21, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Republic of Armenia[edit]

Hi. I actually need Republic of Armenia. It's the third category I need because if I work on all people from all governments, I need to classify them furthermore. I will be adding other governments in the future as well, hence, I will need to specify them furthermore if I am adding more than thirty people in each category and simply, "Armenians" will not be enough to specify because there are musicians, as well as other people of other category in there. The same goes for other nationalities, where I will need to specify them by their governments and living initiations, hence my creation of "Third Reich" and "Soviet Union". That's why I need the category. Is it alright if I could add it again? - Zarbon 15:54, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations[edit]

Let me be the first (well, technically the second, after Alison's edit to your user page) to congratulate you on finally being unblocked at Wikipedia. I wish there had been a more complete vindication, but I must own up to my own failure to pursue that more aggressively (among my many Wikimedia sins of late). I also want to point out that your self-nomination for bureaucrat, to which I expressed concern because it seemed unnecessary, has proven to be quite clairvoyant in view of the rapid increase in name changes requested, probably boosted by single user login finally starting to be implemented. All in all, I humbly apologize for any actions and failures to act that interfered with your Wikimedia work, Poetlister. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 23:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

wikien-l[edit]

Hi, your username had came up a few times on the mailing list wikien-l. On the thread visible I was responding to someone else who mentioned your username. This has irked some people it appears. So I am positing this to clarify the issue.

I am rather concerned with vandals, trolls and other pests that cause disruption on one wiki and then go to another wiki only to continue the disruption. Obviously you are not such a person. The post I made to the mailing list was to address this general problem. The intended result of the discussion was an increase in communication between wikis.

At no point was it intended to attack or otherwise bother you in any way.

Deletion of links[edit]

Why are you deleting links to sites with quotes by or about people, or their official sites? You state we don't "need" these links, but they can be useful. No one "needs" quotes, or "Wikiquote" either. Certainly WIkipedia doesn't need "Wikiquote" links but pages here are regularly linked to from pages there. I believe it is useful and proper to include links that are actually related to the subject, to encourage rather than discourage further explorations, and non-Wikimedian points of view. ~ Ω 20:34, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Wikiquote is a collection of quotes, not of biographical or other encyclopaedic information. We link to Wikipedia for people who want that. Thus there is no point in copying over lots of links from Wikipedia articles unless they are to pages that give quotations. Wikipedia is not a collection of quotes, so Wikipedia articles should have links to here. --Poetlister 20:43, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Most of the links I copied from Wikipedia on the Will Smith and Fred Hoyle pages did provide sources for some sort of quotes by or about either person, for instance the the two obituaries of Fred Hoyle could potentially be sources of quotes:

Obituary by Sir Martin Rees in Physics Today
Obituary in The Guardian

The links to the Will Smith articles in Rolling Stone and other magazines could also provide interesting quotes. ~ Ω 20:49, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
