Wikiquote:Bartlett's 1919 Index

The following is a list of 658 persons (and books) with entries in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. (1919), a work in the public domain, available online here; Project Gutenberg also provides a public domain version of Bartlett's in several downloadable formats here, although the two versions do not appear to contain all of the same material. Anyone who is interested can help out with this project - just click on those links and look up the name of any person below who has not been struck to find all of their quotes, copy them to a text document, and format them for Wikiquote. Note that the 1919 Bartlett's information is not fully sourced, as the quotes tends to lack page numbers and dates. Furthermore, some of the quotes are misattributed or contain errors, so they should be taken with at least a grain of salt. Quotes should be listed as ==Unsourced== until these things have been confirmed.

If the subject has a Wikiquote entry (e.g. is a blue link):

  • Add any Bartlett's quotes that are missing from Wikiquote to the Wikiquote entry's ==Sourced== section with the following note:
Reported in ''Bartlett's Familiar Quotations'', 10th ed. (1919).
  • Once this has been done, move the person's name on this page to the ==Completed== section at the bottom of this page, and unbold and strike through the name.

If the subject has no immediately apparent Wikiquote entry (e.g. is a red link):

  • Make sure that a Wikiquote entry does not exist under a different spelling or arrangement of their name. Note that occasionally Bartlett's uses an archaic (or in at least one case, a flatly incorrect) spelling of the subject's name.
  • If no page is to be found in Wikiquote, look up the Wikipedia page on that person to find the details of their life and work, and add an appropriate introduction and categories.
  • Once this has been done, move the person's name on this page to the ==Completed== section at the bottom of this page, and strike through the name.

Please note that the fact that a name is in the ==Completed== section does not mean that the entry on that person is complete by Wikiquote standards; it only means that whatever quotes the 1919 Bartlett's contained from that person are now contained in Wikiquote.
