Can categories have intros at WQ?[edit]

Adding lengthy descriptions to categories is discouraged at enwp. However, I can see the need to define a term that is not widely recognized.

I don't see why not - and I find them especially helpful when they help define the category (and thus what pages should be in it). I would hold it to the same standards we do other pages (not have a lengthy novel, but enough to explain what it is, using the intro from the appropriate WP page. And I would have also rather that you brought the question up for discussion (maybe even for a wider audience, like at the Village pump) before removing the intro itself. ~ UDScott (talk) 20:52, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@UDScott, one reason for not allowing intros on category pages is, as I told @Koavf here, it would be a backdoor for so-called POV pushers to insert unwanted stuff. More generally it would be w:wp:Original research. Just my $.02.
Having said that, I agree there should be a way to define what a category is for, and what it is not. Some sort of standard notation? Ottawahitech (talk) 14:15, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What I advocate has no original research - I would treat it the same way we do any page - meaning that I would use info from the appropriate Wikipedia page as the intro, not someone’s opinion what the category is about. ~ UDScott (talk) 00:55, 25 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it appears I lied (not intentionally). I just happened to see w:Category:Theophoric names which was created in 2015. Hmmm... Ottawahitech (talk) 01:59, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
