Edit conflict[edit]

I am often getting an edit conflict with myself. Help please!

I wrote about this problem at the Village pump and on the administrator noticeboard IIRC, but there seem be no one interested. How can one start new pages here, if the system does not co-operate and admins who say they are here to serve us are running around too busy blocking (some good) contributors, chasing vandals, and deleting content after skimpy vfd discussions?

Sorry for this rant, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:37, 6 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

First, I don't know what you are talking about - perhaps you can provide some details. Personally, I have never had any issues with edit conflicts (other than a few times when I and another user were both working on the same page). Just saying you are getting an edit conflict is not helpful. I might have missed a post on VP, but to what admin noticeboard are you referring? I don't see any mention of it on the WQ Admin noticeboard.
Second, perhaps the issue is with how you are interacting with the site.
Third, you are presuming that admins have the technical skill or knowledge to handle such problems - but we are not necessarily tech experts (I for one am not technical, and I suspect I will not be able to help you with this problem, but that doesn't mean I am uninterested). You may have to reach beyond this local community for your answer.
Fourth, it is a bit presumptuous to assume that admins are not interested in helping or are too busy with actions that you apparently have a problem with (if you feel that these actions are a problem, I suggest you bring them up directly). A post like this is not really a constructive way to communicate any issues you might be having. I feel that the admin community here, which has always been too small, tries to help where it can, but is also often overwhelmed with the number of problems to address. If we can help, I believe we will. ~ UDScott (talk) 19:45, 6 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you,I appreciate your offer. I have been having trouble with edit conflicts for awhile. They come and go. I believe they started when I had one with you in real time (we discussed it briefly on the village pump), but that was the last time I believe the edit conflict was "real". More recently my edit conflicts are with old edits that the system recognizes as current for reasons I do not understand. I have been checking and it appears that when I am looking at pages I am not presented with the latest version. I know this happens to others too because the system uses different servers, but in my case I often see a version that is weeks or even months out of date.
When I try to edit, my edits my conflict with a weeks-old edit, I think. It happens a lot when I use hotcat. I can almost guarantee I will be able to reproduce this problem if I knew someone was going to take me seriously. I would try to report it when it happens, but in my experience few others take me seriously, so it would be a waste of my time. That's why I hd to let off some steam here, thinking no one would notice my distress. I am glad to see you were paying attention.
btw I am pretty sure I saw an IP who had the same problem, but I think this IP made only one edit. Sorry for the ramble, it has been a long Sunday. Ottawahitech (talk) 04:16, 8 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
