I *believe* that Bill Wiseman is simply a psudonym. Bill being a rather common name, "wise" and "man" being put togeather to make it seem like an actual name. I may be wrong.

I tried various searches here and on google and couldn't find anything, maybe someone who remembers more of the quote can develop this further? • The quote goes something like "There is a god-sized hole in man's psyche." It's almost always attributed to Sartre, but I can't find anywhere that says where he said it or wrote it, or what the original french was.

A first attempt at an answer: Regarding the attribution of the “God-sized hole” as coming from Sartre. After a non-exhaustive search in both English and French, I found a couple of plausible sources that make the attribution problematic. Here are my quick (and most definitely not authoritative) translations, followed by the original texts pasted from the internet sources.

Mac Davis's 1980 song (from the album of the same name) can't be the original use of this phrase. I believe it was already well-established when Phil Spector used a variation as the title and theme of "To Know Him Is to Love Him", a song made popular by The Teddy Bears in 1958. There are two early near-misses by Robert Burns. One is from his "Ae Fond Kiss" (1791):

But to see her was to love her,
Love but her, and love for ever.

The other, almost identical, is from "Bonnie Lesley" (1792):

To see her is to love her
And love but her for ever.

But Samuel Rogers got it pretty well exactly in his Jacqueline (1814):

Oh! she was good as she was fair.
None - none on earth above her!
As pure in thought as angels are,
To know her was to love her.

Thank-you very much for that useful research. However, if you are new to the phrase -- 'To know me is to love me' -- its current meaning seems to be "If you don't love me / like me, then you obviously don't know me / understand me" or that is to say "I may not be very likeable on the outside, but if you knew me, you'd like me". Unfortunately, none of your quotations touch on that meaning. Furthermore, there's currently nothing to suggest that the phrase found its origins in those quotations. I've recently found out that there are some working on translating wikipedia into Mlatese, so it hink it woulb be possible to write a list of both Maltese proverbs and idioms. The MLatese language is rich in proverbs and idioms, and from this aspect it is, in my opinion, one of the nicest languages. Wylands First Law of Automation

David C. Wyland, a Silicon Valley engineer, remarking on the evils of excessive automation:

Hmmm. I hadn't read the page carefully enough. I was thinking Pournelle quoted it, but I see that it was actually quoted by the mail-writer you mention. I'm troubled by the level of indirection here, especially since the source is not a Chaos Manor column, over which Pournelle has editorial authority and responsibility for content, but rather a letter with no provenance for determining factual accuracy. (Not that I'm saying your brother is incorrect; it's a matter of verifiability through reliable sources.) I'm afraid we need to get better sources. Thanks for calling attention to this. I spoke with Mr. Wyland by telephone yesterday; he seemed pleased that his Law might earn him some fame (or, perhaps, notoriety). I sent him some Wikiquote URLs and invited him to comment. In response, he emailed me a document "WYLAWS.DOC" that he claimed was dated 1993; it's about 5K in size, includes the Law of Automation, and some other interesting adages, like the "Law of Time to Market: Good now beats better later."
