Proposed deletion categories
[edit]Thank you for creating these categories, but on this site at least we do not have such categories, because they rapidly become empty.--Collingwood (talk) 19:12, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- Indubitably, thank you. However it would be more coherent if Template:dated prod would categorize into an existing maintenance category. JackPotte (talk) 19:27, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- It does; Category:All articles proposed for deletion.--Collingwood (talk) 19:34, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- The "as of date" categories are not particularly useful here, since Category:All articles proposed for deletion is rarely very large and features a chronological list using <DynamicPageList>. Whenever a page is created for one of these transient categories it soon becomes empty, and is deleted when somebody reviews Special:UnusedCategories as happens from time to time. ~ Ningauble (talk) 18:22, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

The bot operating at Wikiquote:Sandbox is erroneous. Compare this diff with nonexistent template and altered text to the standard message at this diff. Please discontinue this bot task. ~ Ningauble (talk) 18:03, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- Sorry, it won't happen again.
- PS: we should probably merge {{Sandbox notice}} with {{Sandbox}}. JackPotte (talk) 18:17, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
JackBot
[edit]Hi JackPotte
I noticed your BOT "fixing" double redirects and was wondering why there is no explanation or list of activities on the BOT's page. It would be helpful to know what is automated at WQ. For example , can this BOT archive talkpages? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 15:56, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, yes it can archive any page.
- To my mind the ideal system isn't to click on every link on Category:Bots to see who does what (even more if the bot doesn't do the same thing on every wiki and its description is on Meta). I would prefer a list like en:Wikipedia:Bots#Examples, or better with the functions and source code links: wikt:fr:Wiktionnaire:Bots#Bots_locaux. JackPotte (talk) 16:40, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding. I have never set up a talkpage for archiving, but it is good to know that WQ has a BOT which handles automatic archiving. Wikiquote talk:SheSaid for example is a page that would probably need archiving in the near future. Are there pitfalls to avoid if one wants to set up a page for archiving? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 14:50, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- The main thing is to identify the paragraphs to archive with a mark (like a template or a sentence). For now, my bot recognizes theses marks at the beginning of a paragraph title, and cut it until the beginning of the next paragraph, to paste it at the end of the archive page. Archiving discussion at WQ
[edit]I have always wondered why talkpages on WQ are archived manually. Now that I know a BOT is available I am even more curious. Take for example Wikiquote:Village pump. Any idea how to change this? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 14:46, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
- I can see in the history that Wikiquote:Village pump contains all revisions (from 2021, 2020...), no matter where they have been archived. That's not something I recommend because it becomes more difficult to recover a whole discussion after.
- Moreover the current system would imply that the bot would interpret discussions to find dates in them, which is a factor of complexity and uncertainty (comparatively to the mark title system my bot can do).
- However, this Wikipedia bot seems to be OK with it.

- Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me. I had no idea that discussions can be recovered from archives (I assume you mean that old archived discussions can be revived as if they were still current), and still have no clue how to do it. However, just knowing it can be done is great! Ottawahitech (talk) 20:34, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
JackBot sandbox task
[edit]Hey there, it doesn't seem that JackBot has ran in the sandbox for the past year or so. Could you try and get it running there again? Thanks! --Ferien (talk) 20:47, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, the above message showed me that there was a custom template here. So it may be impossible with it in a short time, I'm going to see if it could be changed. JackPotte (talk) 05:49, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
- Alright, thanks. --Ferien (talk) 18:34, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
