University of Texas at Austin and College football nominated for deletion
[edit]I've nominated both of these pages for deletion on the basis that the quotes in them are not about their subjects. In the case of University of Texas at Austin, it appears that the quotes are from people who either attended the school or made a (very) brief mention of it in an otherwise unrelated quote. In the case of college football, again, the quotes do not appear to be about college football; the Vince Young quote is not generally about college football, but about why he chose to play football, and belongs only on the Vince Young page. The Kennedy quote is about going to the moon, and contains only a passing mention of Rice and Texas; it is not in any way about college football. —LrdChaos 15:37, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for letting me know about the proposals for deletion. As you probably know, I am new to Wikiquote, though I have 9000+ eidts to the English Wikipedia and a few other places like commons. It is possible those articles run afoul of convention here, I guess I can't be sure since I am new, but to me that seem relevant and appropriate. Thanks again for the notice. - Upon further reflection, I believe both articles should stay, with one modification:
- I have now removed the Vince Young quote from the University of Texas at Austin article. You are right that he (at the time) was a student of UT, but did not directly mention UT in his quote.
- The quote by Kennedy absolutely is about college football, at least, the part of it I used here is. Sure, the whole speech is not about college football, but I don't see why that is relevant. This quote is making an analogy between college football and the moon landing. That seems very relevant.
- The quote by Vince Young is also about college football. It is true he uses the word "football" as opposed to "college football", but he was a college football player when he said it, and his fame today is still on the basis of being a college football player.
- The quote by Walter Cronkite is referring to "Hook 'em Horns" which is the slogan of the University of Texas at Austin. His broader context is speaking in general about the university, and was used in a commerical for the university. Therefore, it seems more appropriate to include it in an article about UT than it would be to start an article on the slogan specifically.
