Nirvikar Dahiya[edit]

Saksjn, I feel I must apologize for the vehemence of my "delete" vote I just posted at Wikiquote:Votes for deletion/Nirvikar Dahiya. It was not directed at your work on the article, given that you are a new editor here and may not be familiar with some of our basic principles. Please allow me to explain a little:

  • Notability. Subjects must demonstrate that they are notable outside their immediate locale. Evidence for this should be provided by reliable sources, which in Wikimedia means that there must be some published sources with editorial control that show who this person is. Google is not a reliable source, only a rough indicator if someone is not notable (by having a relatively small number of hits, or showing that the hits themselves are not reliable sources). Personal or otherwise obscure websites are also not reliable sources. In this case, the first job here is to show who this person is so we can hope to discover if they are notable.
  • Sourcing quotes. Quotes, too, should have reliable sources. Wikiquote, like its sister project Wikipedia, rises above the mess of user-created websites by developing verifiable information through proper sourcing. Websites with such information must have professional editors taking responsibility for their accuracy. Something like "Philip Humbert's Quotes of the Week" or "Wednesday's Quotes" just isn't acceptable. Even the MotivateUs.com site might not pass a reliability test, and its failure to examine and fully identify sources ensures it isn't useful for Wikiquote purposes.

If the only information we have on "Nirvikar Dahiya" is from quote websites with no sources or editorial review, there is no way to tell whether the subject or quote is just a popular meme or even a hoax. This is why we need reliable information.

I hope this puts the VfD discussion in a proper context. Let me know if you have any questions. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 14:42, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
