Citation style

Just a note, but Wikiquote generally does not use reference sections. Instead, the full text of the citation is generally included in the body. Compare the formating for last page I started, Eagle Woman. GMG^talk 09:28, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

@GreenMeansGo: According to the Manual of Style, WikiQuote uses the same citation style as Wikipedia. Moreover, you would generally want to cite a secondary source rather than citing a work directly, no? (like, for example, citing one of the news articles reporting on Mike Rugnetta's claim rather than citing the original video in which he said it). How do you cleanly present this? How do you cleanly use the same source multiple times? For that matter, how do you include archive links and stuff like that if all the citation information is in the prose? Oh. Umm. Sooo, that MoS section badly needs to be updated (or rather written in the first place). But yes, you should generally prefer secondary sources, and we ought not use primary sources for BLPs. For non-BLP content, it's a bit controversial where you draw the line, especially where the subject of an article is itself a creative work.

As to all the fancy citation gadgets, they pretty much all work here as they do on Wikipedia. You would just omit the <ref> bit in the citation, and let it display in the body rather than transcluding to the bottom of the page. GMG^talk 10:06, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

One of the main things I want to do is to completely change how Wikiquote has been handling fiction, actually quoting notable people talking about a work, figuring out which quotes have received coverage, that sort of thing, rather than just randomly picking a million quotes I like from the work itself (Maybe if a quote from a work gets attention by sources it would be reasonable to include it). Either way, what's the advantage of putting citations in the main text? It appears to me (as an outsider, I guess) as a lot of clutter that makes the entire page more difficult to read. I'm not sure I have a very good answer for why that became the convention over time, but I can say that the model everyone pretty well follows is at WQ:TEMP, rather than at MoS. GMG^talk 10:31, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, GreenMeansGo, this page gives me much better insight in style standards on Wikiquote than the Manual of Style supplies. I assume the Manual of Style talkpage would be the best public forum to discuss citation styles on Wikiquote? (or at the very least, to ask people how current norms came to be. I'm quite curious.)
