How do you think of the article I cleaned-up, Flight 29 Down? Just wondering.-- Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! 19:51, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
- I appreciate your enthusiasm for editing, and I hope that you'll take this as constructive criticism, but it seems mostly like you've just expanded the page, rather than cleaning it up. There are two things I notice about your additions. One, they're arranged by character. While this may seem like a perfectly natural way to do it, and indeed, is how it's handled for films (with the exception of dialogue), for television shows, we prefer that it be arranged by episode, so that all of the quotes come with source information. (You can have a look at Futurama for an example of what I mean). The second thing is that you've put all the quotes in italics. Around here, italics are usually reserved for (in the case of films or TV shows) indicating an action or other unspoken part, or for bits where a language other than English is used.
- That said, there are a lot of things at Wikiquote that can take some getting used to, formatting being one of the most major. If you stick around and keep editing (and I hope you do), you may want to have a look at Wikiquote:Templates, which gives a standard reference for different types of media. If it's not clear, and you're not sure how something should be done, feel free to ask me (or any of the other admins) and we can provide you with help or examples. —LrdChaos 20:07, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Adminship; personal information
[edit]First, I want to apologize for my brusque opposition to your self-nomination for adminship. Basically, the Wikiquote community has, in the past, had no problems allowing editors who have been banned on other projects to edit here, as long as they act in good faith and don't do the things that got them banned elsewhere. (This is subject to Wikimedia Foundation's ability to ban users across projects, but we've rarely seen that problem here, and I am unaware of any such ban directed at you at this time.) But adminship on a Wikimedia project requires a level of responsibility and measured judgment in editing that, while you may be capable of it, you have not yet demonstrated here. (That's not a criticism. Very few editors tackle this process of becoming an admin, and most of those who don't are still valued contributors. Adminship is more of a commitment than a privilege, and Wikimedia tries to make as much work as possible doable by any editor.)
Second, and of much greater concern, is the issue of your age and personal information. As you may be aware, there is a discussion about you going on at w:WP:AN/I#User:Cute 1 4 u that is currently addressing how Wikimedia projects should handle underage users, as defined by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. It's not clear to me whether Wikimedia has any direct responsibility, but in general, it is a very bad idea for anyone (regardless of age) to post so much personal infomation about themselves on the Web. Not only have recent news reports made clear that there are many stalkers and pedophiles who are savvy enough to track down kids on the Web, but there are also many unscrupulous people and businesses who are more than happy to try to use this information to swindle anyone who doesn't approach Internet-based information with a very high degree of caution.
Until we can get some guidelines on this issue, I would appreciate it if you could remove your age from your user page. You should also consider, when you are adding information here or on other web account user pages, whether the things you say can be used by unpleasant people, who may wish to do you harm, to find out who you are in the real world. (A few minutes' checking on your other accounts told me more than I should know about you, and I wasn't even really trying. Notice that I'm not saying how I found your other accounts, nor what I found, as we can't know who else might be reading this. That's the kind of caution I'm talking about.) I would also recommend that you discuss the problem of meeting people on the Internet (vs. protecting yourself from people you don't want to meet) with your parents and/or an adult that you trust. Thank you for listening. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 22:57, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Custom TOCs
[edit]I've removed the custom tables of contents you've made for a couple of pages. Custom tables of contents make editing an article much more complicated, so they should only be used where they're really necessary. Usually, this means that the default TOC has grown so long as to take up an inordinate amount of vertical space, and the custom TOC shrinks that. So, when a show only has one season, and only a few episodes, adding and maintaining the custom TOC is a lot of extra work for not much benefit. Another concern is creating custom TOCs for shows which are still on the air; when a new episode is aired, it's much more effort to update the custom TOC than it is to simply create the new section and have the TOC updated automatically. I know that you mean well, and appreciate your enthusiasm, but it's far easier for other editors (and even for you) to leave the table of contents alone until there's a need to put in a custom one. —LrdChaos 21:51, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Cute, I saw your discussion with LrdChaos on his talk page about this subject. You might want to take a look at some recent discussions on this subject that I've had with a relatively new editor who created TOCs for Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls (see Talk:Veronica Mars and Talk:Gilmore Girls). (The discussions start out the same, but get into show specifics later in the dialog.) These are two shows that are very popular, and GG desperately needs its custom TOC after 7 seasons, even though it's got one more to go.
- But the only person willing to work on the TOC was this anonymous editor, who wasn't willing to commit to this difficult task. I'm afraid I was a bit hard on him/her, but that's because this person wouldn't even accept responsibility for the mistakes s/he made. Custom TOCs take a lot of wiki skill, patience, and careful attention to detail. (Every little letter, space, and punctuation character can count, so we need someone who shows an innate understanding of wiki editing and an ability to catch and correct mistakes — especially their own — quickly.) Anyone who works on these knows they're impossible not to make mistakes with on occasion. No ordinary wiki editor can edit these monsters without disaster, and few would try, so someone needs to commit to maintaining these things even if others break them.
- Even when someone commits to such a project, they shouldn't make extra work for themselves if they can avoid it. That's a major reason why we like to wait until a show is done, because each new season or show is an opportunity to break the table. Furthermore, these tables tend to be ungainly and have an unaesthetic appearance unless someone devotes considerable attention to some formatting that depends on careful evaluation of the layout of titles in the table. (Unfortunately, I'll have to blow my own horn on this one: take a look at my TOCs for Blackadder, Babylon 5, and Firefly (TV series), versus simpler ones others have created for Angel (TV series) and Charmed (TV series). Also look at my more complicated ones, like Buffy and MST3K, that sacrifice readability for compactness. The problems can be quite challenging.)
- Eventually, I had to revert the Veronica Mars TOC, and I will probably have to do so for Gilmore Girls as well. In summary, this is a field one should not jump into too quickly. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 02:14, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
expansion tag?
[edit]Are there tags/templates for expanding articles (like the expandsion tag on wikipedia) ? Just wondering.-- ~ ♥ * Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! * ♥ ~ 02:06, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Not that I'm aware of. (Editors tend to import tags from Wikipedia as they discover a need for them. If you do this, make sure the tag works correctly, as many WP tags have fancy features that don't work on Wikiquote without some extra effort to convert them.) Articles here are typically either stubs or they're not. Our lack here may be because the vast majority of requested work on Wikiquote articles is to clean them up by formatting them correctly, adding an appropriate 1-4 line introductory paragraph (usually based on Wikipedia's intro), and sourcing the quotes, which is by far our biggest challenge. Everyone wants to add quotes; very few people want to identify exactly where they came from. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 02:13, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Okay. It works on this site. All I have to do (if I can) is make a page called "Wikiquote: Requests for expansion" (to make request for things that need to be expanded like on wikipedia), remake the tag, and make a category (possibly called "Category:Articles to be expanded". I can try this...hope it works. ~ ~ ♥ * Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! * ♥ ~ 02:35, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
I just created Template:Expand. -- ~ ♥ * Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! * ♥ ~ 02:44, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
...And I created Category:Articles to be expanded.By the way, thanks for the replies.-- ~ ♥ * Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! * ♥ ~ 02:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay I'm done.-- ~ ♥ * Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! * ♥ ~ 03:31, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for setting up this missing element for Wikiquote. You might want to take at look at the changes I made to see a few points that you missed:
- I corrected chronological flow to match the effect of the "Submit a new request" link, which always adds items to the bottom, and which also is in keeping with the general Wikiquote practice of using forward-chronological order. I also made a few Wikiquote-specific changes that you may not have known about. [1]
- I added specific style elements to the template, based on a use of MediaWiki:Common.css that isn't kept in sync with Wikipedia's copy. (I wouldn't advise tweaking that directly at this point, though, as disasters may ensue. Someday we'll have to add this to our maintenance projects.) [3]
- Don't worry about them too much, though. Just like with articles, templates and policies can be tweaked. The hardest step is usually setting them up well in the first place, which you did. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 06:51, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
You know, I was so busy making sure that this policy page had all the necessary tweaks for Wikiquote, that I forgot one significant difference between us and Wikipedia: we often don't bother with request pages, except for those that involve articles that don't yet exist (like Wikiquote:Requested entries). We pretty much use templates with category tags inside them to collect such requests. I'll have to think about this a bit, but I suspect that we'll wind up redirecting your carefully crafted Wikiquote:Requests for expansion to Category:Articles to be expanded, placing a very brief version of the text in its introduction.
This is one of the challenges in trying to adapt Wikipedia practices for much smaller projects like Wikiquote. Wikipedia has thousands of people who pore over these maintenance pages to think about things to do, so they can afford some duplication of effort, but we tend to favor simple one-step tagging wherever possible. Since Wikimedia categories can do most of the collection work, it saves us a lot of trouble. Sorry I didn't think of that sooner. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 07:07, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for fixing it up. It's pretty hard for me. -- ~ ♥ * Cute 1 4 u |talk to me! * ♥ ~ 20:11, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, it's hard for anybody, and you're doing a pretty good job so far. ~ Jeff Q (talk) 20:14, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Shorty McShorts' Shorts
[edit]I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Shorty McShorts' Shorts, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but it may not satisfy Wikiquote's criteria for inclusion, for the reasons given in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikiquote is not" and Wikiquote's deletion policy).
You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Votes for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Cute 1 4 u. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Cute 1 4 u~enwikiquote that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
