Season 1
[edit]After Hours [1.01]
[edit]- Alberto: You know what I like most about you, Oz? You are who you are, and you couldn't change if you tried.
- Oz: Ain't that what makes me fun?
- Alberto: I dunno, man. You think I could be as good as him? Get his kinda respect?
- Oz: Your father? Sure, boss. If you want. But there are different kinds of power. When I was a kid, there was a gangster, real old-school type -- Rex Calabrese. He was a big deal, at least in my neighborhood. He helped people. If someone in your family was sick, he'd find you a doctor. Short on rent, front you the cash. Knew everyone's names, too. I dunno how he kept 'em all in his head, but he saw you on the street, he'd call out to you, ask how you were. Felt like he meant it, too. When I'm fourteen or something, he has a heart attack and dies, still holding his cigar. In my neighborhood, they threw a parade in his honor. A friggin parade... I mean, it wasn't fancy, but it was the gesture. The show of love, of what he meant. Can you imagine, to be remembered like that? Revered?
- Alberto: What is this? You want me to be like some small-time asshole?
- Oz: ...Nah, that ain't what--
- Alberto: For what? Would that make it easier for you to take what's mine? Or is this you? What you want?
- Oz: No.
- Alberto: [laughs] Holy shit, it is! This is your dream. It's so sweet, too! And so pathetic. You really think people would make a float of your dumb face and march it down the street chanting your goddamn name? "Oh, oh, Oswald Cobb! Remember him? What a guy!" What a little bitch.
- [Oz shoots Alberto. Laughs, briefly. Realizes:]
- Oz: Aw... fu--
- [Cue title card]
- Oz: You're gonna do everything I say, or else I'll murder you and, uh... anyone you care about. You got it?
- Victor Aguilar: Yeah.
- Oz: Beautiful! I feel better. You feel better?
- Vic: Yeah.
- Oz: Good.
- Oz: I mean, at the end of the day, this is all about money, right? Maybe we don't see eye-to-eye on every little thing. Y'know, maybe you don't like me... That's fine. I'm an acquired taste. But I make you money.
- Sofia Falcone: You think they're wondering if it's really me? Well, I would! What, is the psycho killer here's just roaming around free? Having a salad? What'd the Gazette call me? The Hangman? Well, the guards insisted that I read every article, that I see all the stories. If only I'd been a dutiful daughter... Are you nervous, Oz?
- Oz: Nervous?
- Sofia: I'd hate for you to feel nervous with me. Because despite what you might think, I don't blame you. Y'know, if you hadn't gone to my father... He left you no choice.
- Oz: Yeah, sure, but... I could've done something--
- Sofia: Let's not do that. Daddy is dead, and we are... untamed.
- Sofia: You know, Oz, people underestimate you, but not me. I've always known you were capable of more.
- Oz: Shit, Ma, this is Vic--
- Francis: Get out!
- Oz: He's gonna help take care of you! Just in case I need to handle some thing while we're gone, alright?
- Francis: Huh. "Vic".
- Oz: Yeah.
- Francis: What, is he a nurse?
- Oz: Well, kinda.
- Vic: No, I'm not a nu--
- Oz: Well, he's got nurse-like qualities, alright?
- Francis: Don't you see, dear? What you did wasn't impulsive; it was instinctual. You shot that junkie pissant because you wanted to. Just like that. Oh, you're so close now, to having everything you ever wanted, everything you deserve. You wanna run? You wanna hide? No... This city is meant to be yours, sweetheart. What are you gonna do to get it?
- Oz: Listen, uh, the tenement where you live, Vic? I know it's gone. Nothing on Sixth was left standing. Alright, I don't know if you have family or people in there, but you made it. You're standing right here. Now, I've been where you are, and you heard my ma, I mean this... This is one of those moments, you know, where you gotta ask yourself "What kinda life do I want?" You wanna spend your days thinking small, stealing rims, barely getting by... or do you want more for yourself? You saw how the Falcones live. Can you imagine living like that, huh? In a mansion? Maids and butlers and shit? And they don't even know what they got 'cause they always had it? Never hungry, born full... Not us. The world wasn't built for guys like us. That's why we gotta take whatever we decide is ours. 'Cause no-one's gonna give it to us, I mean, not without a fight. Now, I could've killed you -- I could've put you out of your misery, but I didn't. 'Cause you need a guy like me, Vic. But I gotta know... No bullshit. Can I count on you to pull through?
- Vic: Yeah, I... I can do it.
- Oz: Huh?
- Vic: I can do it.
- Oz: I know you can. What, do you think I hire any schmuck off the street? No!
- Salvatore Maroni: What is it you're really after, Oz?
- Oz: I just told you what I'm after, what do you mean?
- Maroni: I know who you are. I know what you are. I don't work with people whose loyalty is for sale.
- Sofia: The guards at Arkham stripped us bare every morning. It was humiliating, being turned into a thing. But after a while, I just started to think "Well, what's it matter? There's nothing left anyway." But my brother? My brother visited me every week, and every week he said that there was something left, and that he was gonna help me fight to keep it. I-- I just wonder how you see me, Oz. If I am more than a thing to play with.
- Sofia: You are so good at talking your way out of things, even at the cost of someone else's life. Especially then, right?
- [Sofia's loops piano wire around Oz's left armpit.]
- Oz: The fuck are you doin'? What are you doing?!
- Sofia: Well, my father isn't around anymore, to reward you with fancy suits and stupid cars...
- Oz: Sofia...
- Sofia: And a club that he lets you believe is yours.
- Oz: Sofia--
- [The henchman pulls on the string, cutting into Oz's armpit. Oz screams in pain.]
- Sofia: It's just you and me now, okay. So I want you to think. I want you to really think. Am I crazy? is it all in my head?
- [The henchman pulls again. Oz screams.]
- Sofia: Tell me. Tell me. Tell me that I'm too emotional and that I have an overactive imagination, and that I shouldn't take things so personally. But first... Tell me he's alive.
- Oz: Jesus, Vic, relax! We just put the Maronis back on the map. If Sal's got a problem with that, then... fuck him. I don't need him. I don't need any of 'em. From here on out, there's no more playing it safe. Drops are yesterday's game. I'm gonna get whatever the hell's in that shipment, I'm gonna run this goddamn city, and I want you in on it.
- Vic: Really?
- Oz: Yeah, you earned it! Y'know, for the most part. And guys like us? We gotta stick together.
Inside Man [1.02]
[edit]- Dr. Julian Rush: I can help you, Sofia. You're safe!
- Sofia: I'm not safe. I'm home.
- Nadia Maroni: This man is a dog, but a dog can be made submissive.
- Oz: We were sitting ducks out there! If it weren't for me, more men would've died!
- Viti: Means you didn't do shit to protect our drops, so Maroni's walked away with the whole goddamn stash!
- Sofia: Is that all you care about? The product? The money we lost? We can get more money, gentlemen. I think you're missing the point here -- they humiliated our family. I mean, they took my brother and they shoved his body in the trunk of a car like he was a piece of trash.
- Milos: Now look, Sofia... We all cared for Alberto--
- Sofia: Well, I doubt that, Milos. I really do. Justice is what matters, and that is what my brother -- your nephew -- deserves.
- Oz: Hear, hear.
- Sofia: You think you know what's best for me, hm? You think you know what I need? How are you any different than those pricks in there?
- Oz: No, that isn't-- That ain't what I'm saying, Sofia--
- Sofia: Very, very convenient that, all of a sudden, you're on my side. Will you look at that. Right? My little helper?
- Oz: Alright.
- Sofia: Fuckin' desperate. You are scrambling for whatever dignity you have left, and you're hoping I will save you. Not gonna happen. I don't owe you a fuckin' thing.
- Oz: No, you're right, you don't. I owe you.
- Oz: Jesus, Vic, I said no silantro! It's fuckin' everywhere!
- Vic: Oh, shit. Sorry.
- Oz: Might as well shove a bar of goddamn soap in my mouth!
- Sofia: You used to work for my father.
- Detective Marcus Wise: Half the force worked for your father, yeah?
- Eve: The Falcone underboss? He's untouchable.
- Oz: No one's untouchable.
- Eve: Then neither are you.
- Eve: You think I want Sofia Falcone knocking on my door? Women like me, we got enough targets on our backs.
- Oz: And I'm telling you... I know what I'm doing. You've seen me through worse, and I've always come out the other side, better than before. Trust me. There ain't nothing about Sofia Falcone I can't handle.
- Francis: If my sons are nothing, what am I?
- Oz: We didn't have a service for my brothers. My Ma said she didn't wanna deal with the pity. Well, my Ma, she, uh... She didn't get out of bed, y'know, for weeks. Maybe a month. I tried all kinds of shit to get her up and going, but... Y'know, nothing took. Then, one night, out of the blue, she came to me, she was all dolled up. She goes, "Oswald, we're going out," she says. I was fuckin' thrilled. She took me to a jazz club on the east side. Monroe's. Yeah, it was the first time I ever heard live music. Whoa! And we danced all night.
- Sofia: You and your mom?
- Oz: It's what we did. How we celebrated 'em, you know? Jack and Benny. They would've fuckin' loved it, too. Anyway, after that, y'know, she started getting out of bed, she went back to work, she took care of me...
- Sofia: What do you think it was that changed for her?
- Oz: I'd like to think it was me, but I don't know. She died a few years back. I never asked. Shit like this, the pain of it, you gotta be careful. 'Cause it'll eat you alive if you let it. It's a hell of a lot more fun to dance.
- Oz: It's gotta be Sofia running a little game. We could be driving to our deaths right now.
- Vic: Sh-- Should we turn around?
- Oz: Nah, the only way out of this is through, kid.
- Sofia: [referring to her cousin's child] She's a real cutie, Carla.
- Carla: Yeah...
- Sofia: Make sure you keep her protected. A young woman in this family? Might not end well for her.
- Oz: We all gotta make sacrifices, pal.
- Luca Falcone: I told you to come to me, not go behind my back!
- Sofia: Well, I did go to you and you told me to weep about my dead brother and do nothing.
- Oz: [after forcing Vic to lay down with Ermad and Castillo's bodies] How does it feel, Vic, huh? Nah- hey, hey, don't close your eyes, look at them, remember, this is what happens when you choke, you understand!? That's a one-way street, Vic! You know how close I got to get popped tonight!? 'Cause you fucked up!? Then I gotta plant the blade and the jewels, a lotta work for me, Vic! A lotta work!
- Vic: Look, I'm-- I'm-- I'm sorry, okay? I mean it!
- Oz: You know what? Fuck apologizing. You wanna survive? You gotta adapt. You gotta respond to the environment of the situation! You gotta think on your feet! You gotta be quick! Otherwise, this is what happens! Whatever Carmine threw at me, I delivered on, every goddamn time! You get what I'm saying?
- Oz: There ain't no playbook for this shit, kid. I saw something in you, maybe I was wrong. You tell me.
- Sofia: We were gonna run the family together. But 'Berto was taken from me. And I refuse to let these old fuckin' men to push me aside again like I'm nothing, so I'm gonna take from them now. And I'm gonna force them to their knees. This should be fun. What do you say, Oz? You in?
- Oz: Let's dance.
Bliss [1.03]
[edit]- Victor: You act like wanting more is a bad thing, but... I mean... don't you want a better life than this?
- Elena Aguilar: Victor!
- Juan Aguilar: If you remember where we came from, we have more than enough.
- Victor: From up here, it's really nice.
- Graciela: That's 'cause you're looking far away, at the rich neighborhoods. If you were out there, looking back at Crown Point, you'd say "Man, what a shithole."
- Victor: [laughs] C'mon, I like it here! Y'know, I do. The city, it's... The city's wild. It's like anything could happen.
- Graciela: Is this you trying to be smooth?
- [They kiss.]
- Victor: Is it working?
- Oz: All these fucks are related, you know? I mean, 60 years ago, two Sicilian brothers jizzed all over the toe of that boot, now I got three dozen Falcones breathin' down my neck.
- Oz: Hey, listen. I know you've been gone a while, but you can buy shrooms in any dorm room of Gotham. It's not exactly what I'd call, uh... "revolutionary".
- Sofia: Well, you have a very limited imagination.
- Vitti: Three days. Go to Italy. Or I'll tell people that's where you went.
- Victor: [to himself] "Hey, Oz... So... there's this girl, and, uh... she means a lot to me. And-And you do too. You know I'm not a rat. Right? You know I'd never... If I... If I ever saw anything... I would never say anything..." He's gonna kill me. He's gonna kill me.
- Oz: Look, fuck... The world ain't set up for the honest man to succeed. Mechanic's a good job. That should be the American Dream right there. Y'know, a beautiful story with a happy ending. But that ain't the way the world works, Vic. America's a hustle.
- Vitti: You know, Sofia, I thought you knew better than to trust this asshole. I mean, especially after what he did to you...
- Oz: What I did to her? The fuck you ta-- shut the fuck up, Johnny!
- Vitti: Y'know, after you got locked up, Carmine, he let him run the 44. But he never respected him. I bet you don't respect him either, do you? Hmm? [to Oz] Look, you're fun at a card game, or over drinks. I'll give you that. But people don't keep you around because they think you're smart. And they sure as shit don't trust you. Nah... People keep the Penguin around as entertainment, because everybody knows that you're a goddamn joke.
- Sofia: I can't tell who wants this more. Me or you.
- Oz: I want this for you.
- Sofia: You say all the right things, don't you, Oz?
- Oz: ...So, listen, Zhao's gonna wanna see that we're serious. Y'know, that we're a team--
- Sofia: Was it worth it?
- Oz: What's that?
- Sofia: What you did to me. Was it worth it? Did you get everything that you wanted? 'Cause it seems like you just-- You-- You want more.
- Sofia: Well, then you would agree that most drug use is rooted in psychological need?
- Feng Zhao: I would agree that everything humans do is rooted in psychological need.
- Sofia: Then I would ask you to examine this opportunity more closely.
- Oz: What did you have?
- Vic: Oz...
- Oz: Before I found you, huh, kid?
- Vic: Hey, hey, hey... Please--
- Oz: Fuckin' nothing. That's what. A loser.
- Vic: I don't--
- Oz: A goddamn nobody. I gave you clothes, money, a place to crash. You got all the opportunity in the world right fuckin' here, for chrissake! But this? This is all you feel? You could've left whenever you wanted. But you chose to stay. How 'bout you ask yourself why?
- Vic: Oz, I don't--
- Oz: No, no, no, let me help! You stayed... 'cause you want something better. You want more than your father ever had.
- Vic: No! My dad would be ashamed of me.
- Oz: You wanna know what's shameful, Vic? Working your whole goddamn life, having nothing to show for it. You still think there's... good, bad? Right and wrong? There ain't. There's just this. Survival. Security, pleasure. They don't give out awards for dying in the projects.
- Vic: Fuck you.
- Oz: Fuck me?! FUCK THE GODDAMN WORLD! They don't give a shit about you, or your family! You think you're nothing. You are nothing 'til the day you die. I thought you were smart, but that's the life you want. Guess what, Vic? Good news! You already got it. So go, get the fuck out of here. You don't deserve this.
- Sofia: Is it done?
- Oz: Triads are in. You don't seem too excited.
- Sofia: Trauma sells.
- Oz: C'mon, we fucking did it. We should celebrate!
- Sofia: I'm sure that you'll manage just fine without me...
- Oz: [realizing what Sofia's referring to] Jesus Christ, fine. I fucked you over. That what you wanna hear?
- Sofia: Tell me that's not your attempt at an apology.
- Oz: I didn't know what Carmine would do. I knew somethin', but... fucking Arkham? His own flesh and blood? I swear, I thought I was looking out for you.
- Sofia: Bullshit. You ratted me out.
- Oz: I ain't no rat!
- Sofia: And I'm not the Hangman! You see the way people look at me, right? I know you do. And what was it all for, hm? For what? So you could what? Become a capo? You're not even a made man... [throws her cigarette out]
- Oz: Yeah, you're right. I ain't. I still made out like a goddamn bandit, and you know what? It was worth it. You asked, that's my fucking answer. I got the club, a Drops operation to run, my own thing. [almost sobbing] A guy like me, gettin' all that? That don't mean nothing to you, maybe, but it does to me. Meant I could have a better life. So yeah, yeah. I don't regret what I got.
- Sofia: ...wow.
- Oz: Yeah, wow, but I'm sorry! I'm fuckin' sorry for everything that's happened to you. Jesus, you meant something to me. Still do. And I fucked it up. And that, I ain't never gonna live down.
- Sofia: [Picks a new cigarette and offers it for Oz to light it up] I don't know where to go from here. I don't know how to trust you.
- Oz: [Picking up Sofia's cigarette and taking a puff] How 'bout I keep showing you how?
- Oz: Jesus, you're in it now, Vic. You're in it now!
Cent’Anni [1.04]
[edit]- Nadia: The second you walked into Blackgate, I knew you were a swindler and a cheat.
- Sofia: Oz, what the fuck is she talking about?!
- Oz: [to Nadia] Shut your goddamn mouth.
- Nadia: Oh, I thought for a moment, you two were... That perhaps you asked him to...
- Sofia: Asked him to what?
- Nadia: Kill your brother... to take his place. But I'm wrong, aren't I? You didn't know...
- Oz: Need a cigarette, take the edge off?
- Sofia: This is the third luncheon this week. A lobotomy couldn't take the edge off.
- Sofia: [to Oz] You deserve better. I mean, we both do, but you have a dick so at least you're eligible for a promotion.
- Carmine Falcone: I've been thinking recently about the future... about our Family's future. Maybe it's time to break with tradition. When the time comes, I want you to take my place. I want you to run this Family, if that's something that would interest you.
- Sofia: Yeah! Yeah, of course. I wo-- I would be honored. But the rest of the family, they're not--
- Carmine: They know you're mine; they'll do as I say.
- Alberto: [to Sofia] Whatever you're thinking, don't. Whatever Pop does at work, he does at work. I mean... We got a good life, right?
- Sofia: I, I didn't-- I've never-- I've never doubted you. I love you. And I know, I know that there is an explanation.
- Carmine: An explanation for what?
- Sofia: You had scratches on your hands, the day Mom died.
- Sofia: [to Oz] Congratulations, you got what you wanted. My father sees you now. You and everyone you love is on his radar.
- Magpie: You're the Hangman, aren't you? I saw you on the TV! My name is Magpie, like the bird. Not "Margaret". My stepmom used to call me "Margaret", and I told her not to, and she didn't listen. It's okay to be scared! I was scared at first, too, but it's not so bad here. You get used to the noises.
- Sofia: I'm getting out in six months.
- Magpie: Isn't that exciting? Oh, I bet there'll be lots of paparazzi at your trial. No one even wrote about mine. Is it fun being famous? Oh, I bet it's fun! Hangman? Hangman? Hangman...
- Rush: How are you feeling? I heard you had an incident in the mess hall today.
- Sofia: A woman beat the shit out of me while everyone stood around and watched, so yeah, I had an incident, yeah.
- Sofia: I don't know how to convince you I'm sane when you've already made up your mind about me.
- Sofia: [to Doctor V, after killing Magpie] I told you, I'm fucking innocent!
- Sofia: You don't have to pretend with me. You miss how it was at Arkham, don't you?
- Rush: You've had a long night.
- Sofia: The control that you had. Treating me. "Rehabilitating" me.
- Rush: I helped Alberto get you out.
- Sofia: And now, here I am! Wearing your clothes... I haven't forgotten, you know. The way you looked at me. So curious. What did it feel like, to get to watch a person unravel? And now you're numbing yourself as punishment.
- Rush: That's absurd.
- Sofia: My father told me I was sick. And Doctor Ventris. And then the doctor after him. And then the doctor after him. For ten years, men have lied to me. And then I come home and it's all the same. They think I'm broken. I'm not broken. I'm not the one who's sick. And neither are you. The world is. You're right. I deserve a fresh start.
- Sofia: Wow. Look at everyone. I believe the last time we were all together was my father's birthday, ten years ago. I'm sure you all remember that night. I know I do.
- Carla: C'mon, it's time for bed.
- Gia: But Daddy said there'd be cake.
- Sofia: Take a seat, Carla.
- Carla: Gia, go get ready for bed, okay?
- Sofia: As you all know, I was stuffed in Arkham State Hospital for a decade. Convicted of murdering seven women. Summer Gleeson. Taylor Montgomery. Yolanda Jones. Nancy Hoffman. Suzanna Weekley. DeVry Blake. And Trisha Becker. Their names are worth saying. Victims are so quickly forgotten, aren't they? Our stories are rarely told.
- Viti: Okay, alright. I think that's--
- Sofia: Yes? Hm? I've had a lot of time to reflect. And I have to say... I was genuinely surprised at how many of you wrote letters telling the judge that I was mentally ill. Like my mother. Not that the judge needed much convincing; my father saw to that. Still, I trusted you. I loved you. And yet not one of you tried to help me. Except for my brother. The man you all flew in to mourn. And you know, the real thorn in my side is that, unlike everyone here, I was innocent. I mean... Jesus Christ, Milos has a higher body-count than I do.
- Luca: Sofia!
- Sofia: I know you're all anxious for me to leave. No one has been shy about that. I'd really hoped that it would be different, but I understand. I don't fit into this family any more. So tomorrow, I'm starting a new life. For the first time, I have hope. To new beginnings. Cent'Anni.
- Gia: My Mom told me not to talk to you. She said you did bad things.
- Sofia: She's right. I did do bad things.
- Gia: Why?
- Sofia: Well, my father locked me away in a dungeon with a bunch of scary monsters, and I had to fight them to survive.
- Gia: Am I gonna get locked away?
- Sofia: No, no. No. You don't have to worry about that. I'm gonna make sure that you never have to fight any monsters, okay? Now get some sleep.
- Sofia: Put your pants on, Johnny. We need to talk.
Homecoming [1.05]
[edit]- Oz: I ever tell you about Rex Calabrese?
- Vic: Uh, no.
- Oz: Well, he ran my neighborhood when I was a kid. Had this, uh, gold Cadillac, white leather seats. It was beautiful. When it rolled down your street, I mean... Felt like your block was blessed. Rex's ride, it wasn't just a car, it was a fuckin' chariot. Made a kid with a bum leg felt like even he could be king. The end of an era.
- Vic: I'm sorry, Oz.
- Oz: For what?
- Vic: For wrecking your chariot. I only got one shot at this, you know? I... I see that now.
- Oz: You came back, Vic. Put your ass on the line for me. A hundred Maseratis couldn't replace that, though this one came pretty damn close. It's you and me now, kid, 'til the end. Ain't it time we got ourselves some goddamn respect, huh?
- Vic: Let's fuckin' go!
- [Oz has just visited Sal and Nadia in prison, handing them a picture of their kidnapped son, Taj.]
- Nadia: Our son is not a pawn. There is a code.
- Oz: Oh, is that right? So what, did I take the wrong Maroni, that it?
- Chief Mackenzie Bock: It's a new era in Gotham, Miss Falcone. The mayor-elect's got a mandate to put an end to the scum of this city.
- Sofia: So you're here to see it for yourself, hm? And I suppose you and your boys are gonna go for beers later, to celebrate? Maybe swap photos of my dead relatives? Or are you gonna sell those to the Gazette? To make up for all the lost kick-backs.
- Eve: I need you to fix this.
- Oz: Well, but that's what I do. I fix things! Don't I fix things?! That's all I ever fuckin' do.
- Oz: Look -- I know this shit's grim. Alright, but none of those fucks were ever friends of ours. They never made us! Luca Falcone didn't even know your fuckin' names! So who you missing? That skinny little pussy, Johnny Viti? Milos? Guy worse lifts in his shoes, we all knew it. Nah, way I see it... Sofia done us a favor. One family down, one to go. Now let's get back what belongs to us!
- Oz: I mean-- My Ma, y'know, she's... I mean, she's what keeps me good.
- Sofia: You ready to head back to the house? Maybe even warm yourself by a nice fire? Light an expensive cigar... Or. Do you wanna die down here in the dark, with all the greats? I can't guarantee you'll get one of these, uh, gold name-plates, but I'm sure we can find you a very nice unmarked hole somewhere.
- Viti: I ain't trying to push on a bruise, Sofia. She was with Carmine 'cause of me. You know that, right? I introduced them? And your father, he was smitten right out of the gate. God, she was beautiful, your mom. She was so beautiful. She had that laugh, when you got her goin', it'd knock you out? But she couldn't take it anymore, being his wife. She just fucking couldn't take it. She tried to leave, once before, but she came right back. She came right because of you fucking kids. It would've been so much easier for her if it weren't for the two of you. I wa... Sometimes, I wish that I... It's done. It's done, just-- What's done is done, what he did is done.
- Sofia: But you kept on working for him. You loved her so much, you were his underboss for years.
- Viti: You wanna be a boss, you wanna win this war? The money's not enough. You need respect. You need soldiers who wanna fight for you. You go it alone out there, you're not gonna last a day. I can get you that respect. I couldn't help your mother. Let me help you, huh? C'mon...
- Francis: I tell my son to visit more, so he sends strangers? I get it.
- Oz: Two buckets?! You can't build an empire with two fuckin' buckets!
- Salvatore: You amateur piece of shit! There's no place I can't find you now. No place, Oz! You are cooked!
- Oz: "Cooked", huh? That's funny. Do me a favor, Sal. Call your wife. See if she answers.
- Sofia: First, I'd like to address the elephant in the room: I gassed the family. I killed them all. And I am... so glad that they're dead. My family disposed of my mother like she was nothing, then they did the same to me. And honestly, none of you are any different. None of you are made men, except for Johnny here. The rest of you... You're pawns. You're overlooked. Expendable. My mother was Isabella Gigante. Few spoke of her after she died because she was a force greater than the Falcones could handle. As of today, my father's legacy is dead and we will never speak his name again. From this point on, I am a Gigante, and this is a new family now!
- Viti: What are you doing?
- Sofia: A family that will not treat you like cannon fodder in a fruitless war against the Maronis, a war which I intend to end!
- Viti: Alright, okay, Sofia? Let's not be rash here, alright? These gentlemen know we got a score we need to settle.
- [Sofia shoots Viti in the head and presents a duffel bag full of cash to the table.]
- Sofia: This? This was my father's. But he made it off of your labor. You did the dirty work, and they kept it all for themselves. If you join me, you will have a new family. And I will pay you what you're worth, more money than you've ever seen before.
- Francis: This looks like the apartment I had with my boys. I hate it.
- Vic: I used to live over there.
- Francis: The East Side is cursed. It takes everything from you.
- Sofia: Freedom always comes at a cost, doesn't it?
- Sofia: Ten years ago, some measly driver spun a bullshit story about me. He betrayed me, the daughter of the Falcone don, and he got rewarded for it. And now, here we are. Both of us suffering at the hands of that same man. But you... Would you have let that stand?
- Salvatore: I would've ripped out his tongue and left it for the vultures.
- Francis: My boy, with such big dreams... Like your father.
- Oz: Oh, no, Ma. I ain't like him. I can fix this. It's you and me under one roof now, like it used to be.
- Francis: Are you trying to kill me?
- Oz: No, Ma, I'm trying to protect you. It's better this way, when we're together.
- Francis: Taking me back here, you're throwing it in my face. What I lost...
- Oz: I lost 'em, too.
- Francis: What kinda man can't take care of his own mother?
- Vic: What happened to 'em? To your brothers.
- Oz: The city took 'em. Just like it took your family. And there was nothing I could... I was, uh... I was too weak.
- Oz: This fuckin' place, calling me home...
Gold Summit [1.06]
[edit]- Oz: So, who's got the power in this city? Falcones? Alright, Sofia's the last of 'em, she don't even like her fuckin' name! [Laughs] Maronis? Sure, Sal's outta Blackgate, but his family's still fuckin' ash. So, who's got the power, huh? That's what the streets are asking. But down here? We know...
- Oz: As long as we stay sharp, duck 'em into tunnels, these Maroni-Gigante, whatever-the-fucks, they can sniff around all they want. I mean, they're so busy with their noses up, they'll never look down. But you and me? Look around. Look at what they got, kid. The good people of Crown Point, hard at work. Right, protecting us. Keeping this whole fucking thing quiet. We got their loyalty... and we got their love. You know why? Because we pay 'em. You know how meaningful that is, Vic? To be the guy in the neighborhood who takes care of people? They're gonna tell stories about us one day, kid.
- Vic: You think?
- Oz: I fuckin' know it. Victor Aguilar... Oswald Cobb. Yeah. Our names are gonna live forever.
- Sal: We gotta find someone he cares about.
- Sofia: He doesn't. That's his greatest asset.
- Sal: So he's got nothing. He takes everything from me, and he's got nothing! Nothing!
- Francis: This thing I got, it's a goddamn dirty thief; it just keeps taking. I can't do numbers no more. I'm seeing things that ain't real. The boys, sometimes I see 'em. They look at me like- like I ain't theirs. It breaks my goddamn heart.
- Oz: I know, ma.
- Francis: I ain't gonna live like a goddamn vegetable! I just ain't gonna do it! You understand?
- Oz: Yeah... No. What do you mean?
- Francis: If my mind goes before my body's ready. I need you to help me. You gotta help me die.
- Oz: Help you die? M- Jesus, ma, you ain't thinking straight!
- Francis: For now, I am. I won't be one of those pathetic old broads droolin', shittin' themselves, starin' out at nothing, with no- no clue what's going on, knowing just enough to make it worse. If I lose my dignity, what else I got, huh?
- Oz: It's cold in here, right? It's- It's too fuckin' cold for ma. They don't even know what she's got. First it was Parkinson's, then Alzheimers, and now they're talking about some fuckin'... thing called lewy body. What the fuck is that, huh? You know, all these fuckin' geniuses, they got the diplomas and the machines, they don't even fuckin' know. How am I supposed to protect her from something like that?
- Sofia: Oz ever seen this version of you?
- Eve: Couple of times, he doesn't like it.
- Sofia: What does he like?
- Eve: He's not that complicated.
- Sofia: So, he's... "the best you've ever had". What else? He's "destined for greatness". I used to lie to men like that.
- Eve: But you don't have to anymore. You have the power now.
- Sofia: You are good at telling people what they wanna hear.
- Eve: It must be nice. You were born in opportunity, honey, so you can afford to think in black and white. What I got with Oz, it ain't just one thing. I know what he is. A liar, narcissist. Killer... But we all got our shit, don't we?
- Oz: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Gold Summit. You all gonna be proud to say you were tonight, all of you. Y'know, I know you hate each others' frigging guts. I mean, the shit between the Massives and the Odessas is legendary... Low Boys, you gotta scrap with everyone just to get a bit of respect. Got the Triads, and the Sullivans, oldest crew in town. But, the most hated here among us... is yours truly. Not for nothing.
- Donnie Sullivan: I got three of my guys strung up! 'Cause of you!
- Oz: Oh, not 'cause of me. They're dead because the Maronis and the Gigantes got the power to take you out! You want revenge? What the fuck is stopping you?! They're right over there, across the Eliot Bridge! And a bridge that was built by your ancestors, Donnie boy! But it ain't named Sullivan, huh? No, it's named for the rich crooks who took credit for your family's hard work! They run shit, we eat shit! The sad thing, Donnie boy, is... they don't even know your fuckin' name! They don't know none of yours. [Steps down from the trunk] But I do. Sal, give me a fucking break, y'know Sal bitches and moans about Carmine stealin' his Drops business? Now what do you think he and Sofia gonna do to you, huh? They'll take your shit, your territories. That's what's comin', 'cause you mean nothing to'em. They don't give a fuck about any of y'all. You know, not even a mile from here, there's a bunch of big time City Hall fucks, they're sittin' in some fancy private club, they're drinking orange wine, they're making crooked deals to benefit them! And guess what, they can't fucking stand each other either, just like you. But they're breaking bread because they know that each of them on their own, they ain't got nothing, but together those soft-bellied pricks, they run this whole fucking city. Why the hell not us? Now, I'm bringing you Bliss, sure, it gives us the extra leg. But the real power, it comes if we got each other's backs. Then Sal, Sofia, the old guard, they won't be able to fucking touch us.
- Zhao: This man is a fool! He betrays everyone he works with! Sofia Gigante. Alberto Falcone. There's no code, no class! The Penguin is a bargain-basement hustler. He'll do anything, say anything, and everyone here knows it.
- Oz: Do they, Zhao? Because here's what I know: between us, we got more territory, more manpower than this city's ever seen. You wanna blow it away? Shit, go ahead. But I do got a fuckin' code! And I put my goddamn life on the line to share with with ya! If we come together right here, right now... they're gonna talk about this night. Y'know, the time that we decided that it's better to work with the ones we hate than live under those that- that don't even know our fuckin' names! Nick, gimme a beer. Look, everything you heard about me is true, you know? I stole Sofia's product, I... I popped Alberto Falcone. I did it all. So fuckin' what? I hustle. I do what it takes. 'Cause at the end of the day, you know... I'm just a poor kid from the east side who's got something to fuckin' prove. Like all of ya.
- [Oz cracks his beer open. And, one by one, so do the other gang leaders. Oz raises his beer.]
- Oz: To taking back Gotham!
Top Hat [1.07]
[edit]- Jack: Mr. Calabrese don't pay Ma nearly enough. Nothing close to what she deserves.
- Young Oz: What are you talkin' about? He just gave us fifty bucks!
- Jack: Look, I'm telling you, he ain't a good guy. You ever wonder where he gets all that money?
- Young Oz: I don't have to. He's a gangster.
- Vic: Oz, I'm sorry.
- Oz: Fuck your guilt! Just get me an army, kid. Go.
- Sal: You're taking us to your operation.
- Oz: I ain't doing shit 'til I know my ma's alright! Just let me talk to her!
- Sal: You trying to make a deal, Oz? With me? Nothin' personal, remember? Hm, just part of the game? "I hold up my end, you hold up yours", you remember? You said that to me! Right? You looked me right in the eye, like a gentleman, and you assured me you wouldn't hurt my family! Guess what? I'm a gentleman, too, and I'm gonna give you the exact same deal.
- Sofia: I'll be honest with you: All those years working for my family, I never gave much thought to Oz's childhood. I know the, uh, highlights, of course. I know he loves making a meal out of those. "I'm an east side kid, I got a bum leg, no father." But those things don't make you a monster, do they? Someone shaped him.
- Francis: 'Kay, you wanna know about my boy, Oswald?
- Sofia: Please.
- Francis: He's always two steps ahead. All those years, driving you around, cleaning up after you and your family, he was watchin'. Studyin'. He knows this game better than you. You changed your name! So what? Okay, you think everything's different now. That don't change the game, sweetheart. Drugs is drugs. Crack, Bliss, dope, Drops... it's all the same shit. Same winners, same losers. So, you call yourself whatever the hell you want, but... when my Oswald puts a bullet in that pretty little skull of yours, I'll be tap-dancing on your grave like Ginger fuckin' Rodgers.
- Sofia: It's a good thing your other boys died before you could turn them into monsters like Oz, huh?
- Francis: You shut your goddamn mouth.
- Sofia: What happened to them? Are they even dead? Or is Oz keeping them locked up in some east side slum, too?
- Sal: [to Oz] This place is filthy. Figures you'd tuck your tail into a shit pipe.
- Sal: Look at this shit. You've got access to the whole city, just like a sewer rat! Now, after we finish packing up Sofia's drugs, I'm gonna take you to her place. That's where you die, Oz. Only thing left for her and I to figure out is how we're gonna do it.
- Oz: You know what I'll never forget, Sal? Is the smell. Burning flesh. Y'know, muscle, fat, shit? The smell of hair. No, I didn't anticipate that. It's real distinct. Tell me, Sal, did your beautiful wife, Nadia, did she wear a special kinda hairspray or something? 'Cause, man, she went up like a tinder box.
- Oz: The fuck?! C'mon, Jesus Christ! You were supposed to destroy me, Sal! Y'know, show me what a big man you are, what a fuckin' big man you are! Huh? Well, I got you! I fucking got you! You filthy, stupid prick! Fuck you! Try to steal from me. Try to take what's mine? What I built?! What'd you say? I didn't hear you. Say it again! Yeah... I didn't think so. I beat you, Salvatore Maroni. I win.
- Sofia: It might sound confusing, and I know that it hurts, but your mom and your dad, everyone in our family... they were bad people who deserved it. And I am glad that they're gone. Don't hurt yourself because of them. This is a gift. You're gonna get out of here. And you're gonna find a new home. And whatever woman you become... you deserve much better than what this family could have offered.
- Sofia: Before my father put me away, he wanted me to take over the family. He put me in an institution, and the second I got out, I walked right into another one. She's right. Francis is right, I thought I was doing something different, and I... I thought that I... I thought that I was different, but I'm still playing my father's game, I'm-- I'm abiding by his rules! I... Jesus Christ, I can't... breathe! Can't-- I can't breathe! I can't breathe...
- Julian Rush: Sofia, look at me. Your father's hand is not on your throat anymore. It doesn't matter what he or anyone else wanted for you. What do you want?
- Sofia: I wanna be free. I wanna be free... And I want Oz to feel pain. Real pain. The kind that I have felt. I need him to suffer for what he's done.
- Sofia: Your mother is a very interesting woman, Oz.
- Oz: Yeah, I know what my mother is.
- Sofia: She helped me realize a few things. I keep trying on all these different faces, but none of them feel quite right.
- Sofia: You think you know what I want. That it's the same for you and me. Of course you do. I guess this game was made for men like you. Like my father. Same winners, same losers. That's why everyone expected me to die in Arkham. No one even considered that I might learn something there. How to play new games.
- Francis: I can't do this alone no more. You have to promise me that you're gonna make something of yourself. That you'll get me every goddamn thing I deserve. Lord, I ain't gonna make it! I don't know how else I can live with this, Oswald! But you'll make me happy, 'cause I deserve a happy life! Don't I? Don't I, Oswald? Tell me!
- Young Oz: Of course you do, Ma. You deserve the best life. And I'm gonna get it for ya. I promise. And I ain't gonna quit 'til I do.
Great or Little Thing [1.08]
[edit]- Rex Calabrese: If Oz is what you say, well... Guys like him? They can serve a purpose. Go on to do big fuckin' things, especially in my line of work. But you gotta know how to control them. Mostly, guys that come to me say they're looking to make money. Now that's fine. But greed don't buy loyalty. If I want loyalty, I bring in guys who are looking for a father. Guys like that got a void to fill. They'll do anything for me. Now, Oswald... He don't need a father. He's got you. He's devoted to you. You can use that. Foster what he's got, embrace that, raise it. Maybe he'd be great. Or maybe not, I dunno. You'd have to bet on him to see.
- Young Oz: I see you, Ma, in ways that other people don't. I see the way you smile when you want people to think you're enjoying something you ain't. I see how you smoke more when you're thinking, or you drink more when you're sad. I see how hard you work. How smart you are. And how you wish the people who matter would notice... or the people like that wouldn't matter at all. No one else believes in you like me. No one else is gonna give you what you deserve.
- Link: Watch what you say. You gotta know your place, or you're gonna catch a bullet. Then you really don't matter.
- Sofia: I just wanna know... was it worth it?
- Francis: Fuck you.
- Sofia: Did he give you everything that you wanted?
- Francis: Fuck you!
- Sofia: Did he fulfill his promise?
- Oz: Ma! Ma!
- Sofia: Or do you wish you would've let Rex take him for that ride? What did you lose by keeping him alive? I know what I lost. What he took from me. He deserves to know what he did to you. How you feel about him and how... how angry you are! Tell him. Tell him.
- Francis: Oswald... I had enough to give, Oswald. I had enough to give all three of you. You didn't have to lead 'em down there, you didn't have to take 'em from me... They were my babies! My world! Your brothers! You're a disappointment. You're a waste of space. I wake up every goddamn day, sick that I'm your mother. She's right. She's fuckin' right. I should've let Rex kill you when I had the chance.
- [Francis breaks a beer bottle and stabs Oz in the abdomen with the shard.]
- Francis: You're the devil. You're the goddamn devil.
- Vic: Goddammit, Oz, listen to me! You gave people jobs in Crown Point! You got the power back on!
- Oz: Yeah?
- Vic: Nobody did that! Alright? Nobody else did that! Nobody even tried! You gave people dignity! Bliss, that's bigger than Bliss! Alright, so... Get the hell up, let's go! Get your shit together and, uh... you know. Be you!
- Oz: You, you, uh... You practiced that, huh?
- Vic: Shut up.
- Oz: No, no, that's good. That's good. You gotta, uh, project more, you know? From your gut.
- Councilman Hady: You wanna be welcome? You gotta look... clean.
- Oz: As a fuckin' whistle. Pal.
- Sofia: What did you say to get Link to turn? I'm sure you... Promised him something.
- Oz: Yeah, yeah what you and the Dai Lo never would. A shot. A chance to be somebody. Link was tired of being overlooked. He ain't the only one, neither. Years of being brushed aside, laughed at, told to eat shit and fuckin' like it? It breaks ya. Makes you wanna break somebody else. Figured you would've understood that, considering. But you? You and your kind, you're so busy filling your own fuckin' plate, you don't see that everyone around you is starving. You got no idea what it feels like, born into nothin'. Havin' to smile at the person whose boot's on your neck. Hopin' one day they'll look down, see you there and just let up? You know what people'll do to push that down? Anything. Anything to push down that feeling!
- Sofia: You think I don't understand that? Right. It doesn't matter... Oswald Cobb, man of the people...
- Oz: That's right.
- Sofia: That's what you need to believe, huh?
- Oz: You're never gonna find peace, you know that? A sick fuck like you... You're going to hell, sweetheart.
- Sofia: I'll save you a seat.
- Oz: Everything I ever done was for her. And in the end... I dunno.
- Vic: Sh-She knew that. She did.
- Oz: You think she forgives me?
- Vic: For what?
- Oz: ...I dunno. All kinds of things.
- Oz: I, uh... I can't bring you with me this time.
- Vic: What do you mean?
- [Oz puts his hand around Victor's throat.]
- Oz: I mean that's the thing about family.
- Vic: Oz...
- Oz: It's your strength.
- Vic: Oz, what are you--?!
- Oz: It drives you. But fuck if it don't make you weak, too.
- Vic: Oz! Oz!
- Oz: And I can't have that no more.
- Vic: Oz! Please, please!
- Oz: I can't have that shit, I can't!
- Vic: Please, please! Oz! Oz! Oz!
- Oz: It's too much...
- Vic: Please!
- Oz: Too fuckin' much!
- Vic: Oz--!
- Oz: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You're a good man, Vic. You got a good heart.
- [Vic finally goes limp.]
- Oz: It wasn't for nothing.
- Oz: Tell me you love me.
- Eve: I love you, Oswald.
- Oz: Tell me you're proud of me.
- Eve: I'm so proud of you.
- Oz: I did it, Ma. Didn't I? Tell me I did it.
- Eve: You did it.
- Oz: Top floor. No one above you, beside you...
- Eve: I knew you would, my beautiful boy. Gotham's yours, sweetheart. Nothing's standing in your way now.
- Oz: Goddamn right.
